The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

First up is our good friend ‘Space Man’ a firm believer in  ‘Everyone who gets on the Bus must drink a glass of water before. No ifs no buts and no bloody coconut water’ 

Here's a little bit more about him: 

The Space man a mysterious entity. A being of some sort, which in all honesty is hard to describe. Our first real encounter with ‘The Spaceman’ was in a sad boi/tech head/bedroom dj house hold. A place where sweaty boys talk tracks, have cheeky 3 way b2bs. I Mean like it was a 4 man house but the other flat mate didn’t mix so was he even a flat mate. U know dem ones who  asking u to ‘turn it down’ at 5am before they have an exam.  As soon as u leave call em a Nark Yh, dem ones. Anyway….. 

A place where you believe your mate when he says ’Bruv I did this maaad mix last night in my room wish I recorded it’ . A place where real work gets done (Fuck a degree just be a ‘bad boy mc’ u get me….) It’s only in realms such as this ‘Space Man’ could hone in on his craft. Meditating on what it is to really be a ‘Space Man’. But more importantly how he can encourage people to drink more water.

Joe Samrai is always on the move. His introspective view on bus travel leaves our little souls with much to reflect on. 

We first spotted Joe in Bristol’s true underground scene ‘The University of Bristol Symphony Orchestra Rehearsal Space’. The Samrai uses his ‘Katana (Cello)’ with such skill, cutting through the haters, bossing out some Mahler. We met at Half time shot the shit, found out we had much in common. Then we found out he could mix. Then we found out he could produce. Then we found out he could speak 3 languages. We started to gas this 4 string warrior?. 

But then he fucked off to Colombia.

But your boy’s Back. After cooking up some tunes under his Alias ‘Igrimas’, mixed with some wavy imports. Joe’s got us feeling dreamy.
