Fresh from releasing Valley Of True People on Rebellion last year, Cadenza co-founder Quenum makes a welcome return to the label this March with the three-track Little Secret. On remix duty is Berlin mainstay and Crosstown Rebels regular Yulia Niko. 

Quenum described the inspiration behind the release, stating: “When I made Little Secret, I imagined myself in a gospel church, with the chorus around me. That’s why I used a strong and deep bassline, with vocals and the organ. Amnesia is the darker track on this EP. It’s slightly hypnotic, as if you were meditating in the middle of the dance floor.”

Little Secret takes the lead, pairing stripped-back percussion with subtle kick-hat combos. Echoing vocals chime in the background, as tribal drum patterns create a soulful feel throughout. Amnesia soon arrives, setting the tone with an ethereal, dream-like opening before resonant kicks take over to form a surreal, late-night number. Yulia Niko’s remix rounds off proceedings, retaining the minimal feel thanks to spacious pads and touches of acid throughout.

With more than three decades of experience under his belt, Quenum has cemented his reputation as an esteemed talent in the electronic music sphere. Cutting his teeth alongside Paulo Nascimento under their Access 58 alias in the late nineties, it was in 2001 that the Swiss-based talent teamed up with Luciano to produce the iconic Orange Mistake. This resulted in the pair forming Cadenza, a label that continues to release to this day. Fast-forward to now and Quenum has continued to delight fans the world over, with recent productions landing on Sven Vath’s Cocoon and Pan Pot’s Second State.

A regular of Berlin’s music scene, Yulia Niko is no stranger to Rebellion, having produced the renowned Casa An El Agua for the label in 2018. The Watergate resident has followed this up with several successful releases on Damian Lazarus’ Crosstown Rebels in recent years, including Paradise and Fatima.

'Sometimes you dream about being able to stroll from planet to planet. Waddling smoothly between interstellar places within minutes without working up a sweat.

These 3 versions of the track Deía do exactly this. And they do it with elegance and fleet-footedness. Even if all the tracks are quite different from each other, so they all circle around the same yellow glowing ball of light in the same solar system. They share the warmth of a fervent sun-soaked afternoon. An afternoon perfect to discover stars and explore little adventures.

The original track from Mira & Christopher Schwarzwalder takes its time before it puts you in your space suit. It guides you into your journey with a cautious hand, letting the engine reverberate at just the right time. It doesn’t matter if we’re ascending or descending through the atmosphere, we’re on the move.

Ruede Hagelstein also takes his time. First, he sends us a postcard with the most beautiful description of his home planet. Later, he begins to fill us in on all the details of its origins and history. All this he does with the guiding hand of a perfectly experienced travel guide who loves nothing more than to share these little secrets and stories with you.

AVEM, in turn, picks us up with his planet cruiser - an old family heirloom – which he has devotedly maintained for years. The sound aboard prepares for the slightly wonky sunrises in his homeland. He points out of the cockpit with bright eyes and whistles 'Deía - oh, Deía – we are coming! “'

This is Stephan's fourth appearance on the label in less than a year, but the first
collaboration with Yotto. With distinctive but synergic sounds, both artists are renowned for their ability to imbue their music with rich musicality and captivating rhythms. On 'New Era’ we are invited to join an odyssey into the infinite field of consciousness. The title track has the typical Yotto rippling rhythm that gallops along while drawing you into its orbit, whereas a melodramatic signature Stephan Jolk riff infiltrates your heart centre. On the flip ‘Only One’ takes a
more unassuming approach, the sombre tones complemented by the main melody which is melancholic, but at the same time uplifting. Dance music with pure soul at its core.

Both artists keep busy with their own solo projects (Milio and Coloray respectively) but continue to find fascinating middle ground when they come together in the studio. 2020 saw them step out on Moscoman's Disco Halal and Solomun's Diynamic, while they have also been remixed to great effect with influential DJs like Dixon and Tale Of Us playing the results. Now, though, they are back on Atomnation with another superb collection of cuts.

The undulating 'Acid Neverland' opens up with its succulent and supple drums overlaid with heavenly chords and glowing pads. Coloray's vocals are then layered in to bring some drive and attitude to this most compelling of tracks. 'King Cobra' is a dubby delight. Its airy hi hats, bulbous bass notes and tripped out melodic motifs all sinking you into a trance.

There is more angst and energy to the malfunctioning melodies and steel-plated drums of 'Mirrored Identities' while 'Waiting For The Morning' is a perfect dreamscape. It's a super widescreen track with deft pads coming in and out of focus, glistening melodies reflecting light and pulsing drums locking you in. 'Private XS' flips the vibe with more drawn out and sinewy synths gurgling and bubbling away as they ride up and down the scale like a slow motion cosmic explosion. Last but not least, 'End of Time' has the most pop hooks and catchy riffs of the lot. They dart about the mix as smeared pads and crunchy, punchy drums encourage you to cut loose.

This is another masterfully cohesive collection of colourful dance floor cuts that take in pop, techno and synth music and skew them the unique lens of Tunnelvisions.

Opening with the title track, Outcome and Straub employ crisp militant percussion from the outset, filling the space with a heady and hypnotic motive that sets the tone for this 4-track offering. Industrial hits and an eerie high-pitched synth invade the serenity with purpose and are subsequently mirrored in the break’s bass line for a definitively euphoric experience. Outcome’s solo “Hayal” plays next, featuring all of the unique sound design elements we’ve come to crave from the Croatian outfit. Flaunting groove-inducing percussive rhythms, the duo introduces an ambiguous vocal motif that oozes middle eastern flair. The EPs final original cut “Modular” is another collaborative effort that follows in the footsteps of its predecessors. Laying a foundation of clean, sharp percussion, Outcome and Straub weave soft mechanical detailing and cosmically charged synth riffs into their cut, lulling the listener into a state of sonic bliss. Closing out the EP, Tel Aviv’s Kadosh offers his perspective on “Modular”, crafting an experimental re-work that celebrates the acute intricacies of its counterpart. All 4 chapters of the "Lyra" EP have been tried and tested on John Digweed's Transitions radio show and Bunker Sessions, striking a chord with his dedicated fan base across the globe.

Spear-headed by label boss and dance music legend John Digweed, Bedrock continues to push the boundaries of their output, channeling the authentic perspectives of both established and upcoming talents. In doing so, the imprint is navigating a new and diverse path for the electronic music scene that celebrates innovation and originality, with “Lyra” serving as yet another stellar example of their tenacity to promote meaningful and dynamic techno that leaves a lasting impression.

The deeply emotive 'Senses' opens up and shows the artist's knack for crafting catchy but classy melodies. Here, he layers them over a sleek techno groove that journeys to the stars and eventually meets a second bright and soulful melody line. Once they come together, they begin to sing in harmony and send shivers tingling down your spine as the supple beats roll on. Then comes the gorgeous 'Freefall', which is about an angel who falls in love with someone and both have to leave their own worlds in order to be together. It's a richly detailed and cinematic techno offering that captures a real sense of love- struck longing. The angelic vocals are spellbinding as the beats build and the serene chords wash over you time and time again to teary-eyed effect.

This is a pair of truly artful techno tracks that make an indelible impression.
