"Son Sistem Tsiftetelli Vol.1 (1933-1969)” by Souma Records is the first part of a selection of Greek and Turkish tsiftetéli – or çiftetelli – songs and instrumentals, some in Greek Rebetiko and Laikó style, others in the oriental folk tradition of Greece and Asia Minor led by Roma musicians.

For Greeks dancing tsiftetéli is a social thing, sometimes performed by couples. During the 60s and 70s in Greece and the US, live Laikó bands and oriental ensembles were often accompanied by a belly dancer, although this was not the case when the style first crept into the Greek repertoire when the repatriated musicians from Asia Minor expressed their pain and loss through this music. Mainly during the 60s the gloomy lyrics disappeared from the tsiftetéli and it morphed into a beguiling dance. Modern belly dancers hardly ever dance to tsiftetéli anymore but prefer instead the typical dance routines (raks sharqi) from the Middle East. The magic of tsiftetéli lies within its hypnotic grooves, intoxicating melodic scales and the extreme musicianship of the performers.
 
The term tsiftetéli derives from the turkish word çifte-telli, which means ‘double-stringed’ (diplóchordo in Greek) and refers to an authentic violin technique (cfr tracks 4,11,16 & 17) of running two strings through the same nut slot of the instrument creating tautophony (two strings playing at the same pitch) or tuning them an octave apart. This spaced-out effect generates a more oriental and sensual feel.

All tracks are recorded from Fred Kramer's (Souma Records, BE) collection of shellac and vinyl records he excavated over the last 10 years in Greece, Egypt and the US.

Composed exclusively with feedback using hydrophones, water and porcelain bowls.Feedback occurs with each bowl tuned on certain frequencies depending on the quantity of water. I manipulate with hands the balance between calm water stabilizing and accelerating feedback and waves moving and interrupting feedback tones. Feeling like I become wind…! Multi-tracked and half speeded in part.

Meridian Brothers - Coplas pa' cantar al atardecer (LP preview)

Peter Zummo (1948) is a trombonist who has explored ensemble music at the border between classical chamber music and free-jazz. 

His first album, Zummo With An X (1981), was recorded in a trio with Arthur Russell on cello and Bill Ruyle on tabla, highlighted by two lengthy minimalist suites Instruments (for duo, trio and quartet) and Lateral Pass.

This is an 8 minute extract of the newly remastered Song IV which usually weighs in at just over 20 minutes.

This reissue will be available on vinyl (180gm) for the first time since 1985 in June 2012.

I spent one day getting taxis in Beirut. I wanted to discover the tastes in music from these people who drive all day long through back roads, littles lanes and huge urban railways.
I asked the drivers to put on the stereo theirs favorites audio tapes, radio music stations or compact disks. I recorded all directly with my cellphone. That’s why the quality of the sound is really rough, but I wanted to do it very conceptual and diy. 
Indeed the mix is full of sounds; like drivers who smoke and coughing, the brakes creaking and the speech between me and some drivers.
In the same day, I stood longtime in different spots around the city recording the traffic jam and the urban noises. It will also appear in the mix during transitions. The mix contains traditional folk music, lebanese arab-pop and internationals.

Soundway presents the unique results of a one-off 2018 meeting in Marrakech between Belgrade-based tribal/techno/industrial outfit Tapan and the nomadic Touareg electrified desert-blues group Generation Taragalte. A dark, desolate and potent collision of the electronic drone-jazz of Belgrade and the windswept, desiccated psych-guitar riffs of the Moroccan Sahara.
There is a need to understand, but for this knowledge is not necessary. The hypothesis of God, for example, provides an incomparable opportunity to understand absolutely everything, not knowing anything at all. Give a person an extremely simplified system of the world and interpret any event on the basis of this simplified model. This approach does not require any knowledge. A few memorized formulas plus the so-called intuition, the so-called practical judgment and the so-called common sense. 
Tapan guys know this formula very well, and don't even hesitate to share it with you. Another super eclectic release from our very favorite duo from  planet Earth. Four tracks "Atlas" EP out on 12" and digitally format, November 1st.

Getting lost is an art. Losing oneself among the winding streets of an unexplored town or losing oneself to an overwhelming sensation requires one to let go. To forget. To not look forward. To not seek. To not pay attention. To stop time. To disappear. For a music lover, getting lost in the music is a sacred ritual; it's a conjuring tricking that pushes the listener from their listening chair and into the universe created by the artist. 
Bas Grossfeldt's Lost in Sensation is perfectly named: you start the track in a listening chair, with pads, percussion, and other elements softly flowing into your ears and then…woosh…elements disappear…your chair - gone…your stereo - kaput..your ears - cant feel them. You will just find yourself floating, along with the music, blissfully lost. Yes, it's that kind of a track. Give it a whirl but don’t schedule anything after the track: you wont make it. Expect to be lost and expect to enjoy the disappearance.
