What started as a handful of selfdescribed “banjo nuts” getting together to play after a rough winter in 1967 became a band with more than 50 members

The Flint Banjo Club, is considered one of the best banjo and old time music clubs in the United States. They established a tradition in holding their annual Banjorama, the FBCs primary fundraiser

The club was founded in April 1967 by six banjo enthusiasts from Flint Michigan back when American manufacturing was prosperous and thriving union jobs allowed for workers to retire with pensions, healthcare, and social stability 

“…no doubt as a result of cabin fever resulting from the preceding relentless winter,” wrote C.O. Johnson, one of the original six founders, who was is still strumming away with the ensemble in 2014

The FBC collected a number of awards. Members had diverse professional backgrounds and most were retired. The club performed across the country, in concert at prestigious halls including the Whiting, as well as hospitals, schools and senior homes. The club has raised more than $50,000 for community projects and in particular, scholarships administered by Mott Community College

Since 1974, the annual “Banjorama” featured a variety of banjo and non-banjo old time entertainment

On Reflection in the Space Church

Civic "time keepers" are not unusual and some are quite famous; Big Ben comes to mind, Times Square of course.  Smaller towns may have a clocktower, or the local church may have chimes that ring at certain times of the day.  For St. Francis, Kansas, it was the civil defense siren.  It would sound three times a day; at 7:00 AM, 12:00 noon, and 6:00 PM, and take the day off on Sunday unless there was an emergency.  
Like the "Walkin' Boys", the St. Francis siren was integral to the character of the town and I felt it, too, needed a song;)  I decided to write the song as if the siren were telling its story.  And you're in luck, you even get to hear the actual siren and the dogs barking in chorus to help it sing its song.  Harvested from a forty year-old cassette tape, you'll hear a little hiss, but is quickly forgotten:)
Lyrics beginning with the chorus:

At 7:00 AM I herald the morning,
At 12:00 O'clock noon, I'm the dinner bell,
At 6:00 PM it's time to close up and go home,
And the in-between quiet means that all is well.
Verse 1:
You can hear me all over town,
And the valley for miles around,
I'm the St. Francis siren and I'm loud and clear,
I'm heard six days a week throughout the year.
It depends upon where you are,
In town or out on the farm,
Like an air-raid whistle, I can give you chills,
Or break the silence of the nearby hills.

But there are moments when I break my routine,
To signal danger often unseen,
From a raging fire, or when it starts to storming,

I spent two years making Punto Ártica album as a whole, and I mostly played my mom’s Spanish guitar in the spare time. This theme and chords got shape with time, without any plan, in some different variations I’ve tried to remember and craft here.

Even a 7/4 vocal section had come up. In the spirit of this new profile, I asked Codi (https://soundcloud.com/noisealter) to adapt my translation of a poem I wrote when my age was about 1/3 than now (see below), and he also sung it with the passion and delivery I was looking for !!

Efe de frío, Febrero,  /  ‘F’ for Freeze, February,
tiempo de ocio y ventura  /  leisure and venture time.
Sueño, guitarra, lectura,  /  Sleep, guitar, reading,

Tiempo de amigos y risas  /  Time for friends and laughter,

"The Turtle Project" started out as exactly that, a project, a songwriting project that was born from years of being a musician in many bands, doing countless gigs, naturally gathering experience and inspiration until, one day, I stumbled upon the fact that I could actually put those experiences and many others into words. The composing aspect grew from that into what it is today ...
