Another cover of Mother (Superior) Mitchell off her sublime "Blue" album. I make it a point never to revisit any song I cover before recording my own spin on it. This usually means I miss a lot of the original musical boat -- often lyrics as well -- but it also can help ensure a more unique version as opposed to a merely faithful cover. For e.g., I know my intro / outro dissonance sections are way off from what Joni does, but I had a lot of fun finding a variety of synthstrument sounds to layer for my take on my aural memory of it.

Her lyrics here (and everywhere) resonated with me as a young girl and still do today. Even if I no longer "wreck my stockings in some jukebox dive," I still "wanna be strong" "wanna have fun" "wanna laugh along" "wanna shine like the sun" "wanna belong to the living" and "wanna be the one that you want to" hear.

Another album that I’ve been listening a lot this week is that of New York’s own Pale Lights. […] But what an album this is. It’s only 30 minutes long and opens with a cracker of a song called “Another Broken Heart”. You already know what to expect in the other 9 songs. Just heartfelt jangly indiepop crafted in perfection. Highlights are “Port of Shadows” that reminds me of The Bats, their previous single “Boy of Your Dreams” that has that Felt-ish guitar, or The Chills inspired “Only an Ocean”. I don’t know what will happen in 2014, but this might be a serious contender for your next year list!

Hot on the heels of their Shaun Keaveny BBC 6music Record Of The Week for their abrasive, distortion-heavy single "Enabler", and a host of glowing reviews including an 8/10 from NME for their remarkable new album Expect Delays, Evans The Death are set to release a second single “Sledgehammer” from the album. Poppier and more immediate than "Enabler", and bursting with exuberance and youthful angst, the new single showcases a different side to the band (and has absolutely nothing to do with the Peter Gabriel 1986 smash with the same name).

Recorded with producer Rory Atwell, Expect Delays is due out in March via Fortuna POP! (UK/EU) and Slumberland (USA) and bristles with an underlying tension, veering from rip-roaring noise to quiet contemplation, underpinned by Katherine Whitaker’s extraordinary voice. Still barely out of their teens, there’s a tremendous sense across Expect Delays of a band coming into their own, honing a plethora of influences to make a sound that is uniquely them. While retaining the post-punk and 90s alt-rock inspired elements that peppered their debut, the music is more expressive, heavier and more experimental, and the lyrics more nuanced, the sense of despair leavened by sharp wordplay and humour.

More ambitious and focused than their previous record, whilst sacrificing none of their spontaneity and vitality, Expect Delays is a supremely inventive and intelligently crafted album from a band who have suffered for their art, and used that experience to inform and nourish their work. Expect no more delays, Evans the Death have arrived.
