Abendpfauenauge (Smerinthus ocellata)
Das Abendpfauenauge verdankt seinen Namen der markanten Augenzeichnung auf den Hinterflügeln. Die rindenfarbenen Vorderflügel bieten eine perfekte Tarnung, wenn es tagsüber an Baumstämmen ruht. Bei einer Störung zieht es die Vorderflügel ruckartig nach oben. Der Falter gibt nun das Erscheinungsbild eines Gesichtes ab, das den Störenfried plötzlich anstarrt. Durch schaukelndes Vor- und Zurückbewegen des Körpers wird diese bedrohliche Wirkung noch verstärkt.

Eyed hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellata)
The Eyed hawkmoth owes its name to the distinctive eye drawing on its hind wings. The bark-colored forewings provide perfect camouflage when resting on tree trunks during the day. In case of a disturbance, it pulls the forewings up jerkily. The moth now gives off the appearance of a face that suddenly stares at the troublemaker. Forward and backward swinging movements of the body intensify this threatening effect.


Oleanderschwärmer (Daphnis nerii)
Der Oleanderschwärmer ist mit seiner unglaublichen Farbenpracht ein Sinnbild tropischer Schönheit. Als Wanderfalter fliegt er selten auch in unsere Gefilde ein. Mit einer Spannweite von bis zu 13 Zentimetern ist er ein wahrer „Jumbo“. Sein Flugstil ähnelt dem von Kolibris. Er erreicht dabei Geschwindigkeiten von 50 km/h. Sein Saugrüssel, mit dem er an Blüten Nektar tankt, wird so lang wie sein Körper.

Oleander hawkmoth (Daphnis nerii)
With its incredible colors, the Oleander hawkmoth is a symbol of tropical beauty. It rarely flies into our fields as a migratory butterfly. With a wingspan of up to 13 centimeters, it is a true "Jumbo". Its flying style is similar to that of hummingbirds. It reaches speeds of up to 50 km/h. Its proboscis, the tubular mouthpart used for feeding on the nectar of flowers, becomes as long as its body.

Sir James Radcliffe, Earl of Derwentwater (1689-1716) spent part of his youth as the companion of the young James VIII in exile in France at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He received permission to return to England in 1709 and quickly established himself as the leader of the Jacobites in Northumberland. Following their defeat at Preston in 1715 and his subsequent execution in London he became a tragic hero of songs and ballads.

After surrendering at Preston, he was attainted (brought to justice) and condemned to death. Attempts to win a reprieve were in vain and he was beheaded on Tower Hill on 24 February 1716. His remains were secretly conveyed north for burial in Dilston Chapel, Corbridge, very near his home, Dilston Hall (there is also Dilston Castle...now mostly hidden, but I believe some restoration is taking place). As the cortège bearing his coffin reached the outskirts of Durham City, the skies were spectacularly lit up by a brilliant display of the aurora borealis (the Northern Lights).

Rumours spread quickly that this was an omen of heaven's wrath at the death of the gentle and popular Earl. The lights were afterwards known in the north of England as 'Lord Derwentwater's Lights'. With this superstition the Derwentwater legend was born, and the dramatic and tragic events of the Earl's short life were soon firmly entrenched in Northumbrian folklore.
