Emerald & Doreen Recordings once again delve into Eastern Europe with Ummagma, a Canadian-Ukrainian dream pop duo, who got their start in Moscow and have made enough waves there for a full-page spread in Rolling Stone Russia. Ummagma combines their love of indie rock, synthpop and electronica to create “dreamgaze” power pop. In these two tracks, stunning hypnotic vocals and lush blissed-out resonance create a sonic launching pad to the galaxy or the universe within while getting your groove on. In "Rotation", this occurs on waves of bombastic synths, and in “Live and Let Die”, epic guitar riffs lace with magnetic drumbeats to stage an astonishing dreampop fest. With a jubilant Stereolab and Curve-type feel, these addictive tracks lovingly embed themselves in your brain. Tripped out, Ummagma brings a soundtrack of reverie for both trailblazers and stargazers. This single is a teaser for several Ummagma releases on Emerald & Doreen forthcoming in early 2014.

Since exploding onto the underground music scene in 2012 with 2 independently released full-length LPs – “Antigravity” and self-titled “Ummagma” – the duo has been blazing a colourful, yet eclectic, path forward. Ummagma are a rare commodity in today's music scene: deliciously diverse, dreamy, and loaded with positivity.

Since then, Ummagma has garnered over 350 unique articles, with rave reviews from The VPME, Echoes and Dust, AltSounds, Sounds Better With Reverb, Rolling Stone, The Sound of Confusion, and WaveMaker Magazine, among others. The 2 albums tied as the #3 Best Album of 2012 in After Pop Magazine, ranked in the top 20 for Rock XS Radio and #21 in Sloucher Zine. Ummagma have caught the attention of Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins/Violet Indiana), who has remixed a track for their forthcoming LP, and also has several victories under their belt, winning the 2013 Alternative Eurovision, hosted by Amazing Radio, and 2 awards at the 2013 Australian Independent Music Video Awards, including Best International Pop Video.

Manchester-based indie music stalwart Harry Stafford has announced his forthcoming album 'Gothic Urban Blues' with Guitar Shaped Hammers, an album about the Metropolis, the naked city, the urban sprawl and the need to get back to the ripped back streets when you’re far away. If there are a million stories in the naked city, here are a few to keep you warm. Ahead of this, they present the lead track 'She Just Blew Me Away'.

"She Just Blew Me Away' is dedicated to Jim the singer, who would tell me stories of his love affairs. He would begin with. “I mean, she just blew me away”. And and how did it end? I would ask. “Ah well, she just blew me away,” says Harry Stafford.

Mixed and engineered by Ding Archer (The Fall, PJ Harvey) at his 6Db Studio in Salford, this album was co-produced by Archer and Harry Stafford.

Led by Harry Stafford, best known as founder, guitarist and vocalist of post-punk gothic rockers Inca Babies, the band's core includes drummer Rob Haynes (The Membranes, Inca Babies), trumpeter Kevin Davy (Lamb, Cymande), guitarist Andy Mills, and Vincent O'Brien on Weisseborn slide guitar.

Formed in the early 1980s, Inca Babies released four albums and multiple singles and Peel sessions. Much of his musical career has been spent with Inca Babies, playing across Europe and the world but in 2015, after 35 years with Inca Babies, Stafford decided to release untamed solo material that echoes his love of blues piano and barroom ballads.

The new album 'Gothic Urban Blues' and debut solo album 'Guitar Shaped Hammers', released in December 2017, are the inevitable result, reflecting a multitude of ideas around a driving yet lilting punk-piano blues. The idea was for Stafford to leave his noisy electric guitar behind - abandoning everything he held and cherished - to make some new music with a piano and a head full of ideas.

The new album, out in March 2020, features a more defined sound of a band finding its stride. The band is hereforth called Guitar Shaped Hammers to reflect this cohesion of musical unity - with more guitars from Vincent O'Brien, and an additional layered sonic blast from Nick Brown (The Membranes). With intense percussion from Rob Haynes and a truly masterful trumpet contribution from jazz supremo Kevin Davy, the result is very much the soundtrack of a basement radio station stumbling across a new genre they’ve tagged Gothic Urban Blues.

As of February 7, lead track 'She Just Blew Me Away' will be available as a digital single. The full 'Gothic Urban Blues' album will be released on March 27 via Black Lagoon Records on both vinyl and CD. It will also be available digitally everywhere, including iTunes and Spotify. It can be pre-ordered via the artist's Bandcamp.

She Just Blew Me Away

Ummagma is an eclectic potpourri of dreampop, indie rock, electronica, post-rock, ethereal wave, space rock, post-punk, ambient and shoegaze. Their musical play is full of resonance, beats, rhythm and vocals ranging from gossamer to deadpan over a bed of intriguing soundscapes. Ummagma began as an affair of love and sound. Band members Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon met in Moscow while soul searching, their relationship ultimately developing into a marriage and the musical partnership we know today as Ummagma. 

Ummagma debuted on the music scene in 2012, simultaneously releasing two debut albums. In the past few years, Ummagma has released several EPs involving several genuine music icons, including Dean Garcia (CURVE), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins), Rudy Tambala (A.R.Kane), and Malcolm Holmes (OMD).

Ummagma won the 2013 Alternative Eurovision on Britain's Amazing Radio (representing Ukraine amongst 23 countries), as well as numerous independent music video awards. They have been featured in Rolling Stone Russia and Rolling Stone Italia. Ummagma also co-wrote, produced and performed on the 2014 debut Sounds of Sputnik EP, which saw them working with Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver, Brian Jonestown Massacre) and Fran Ashcroft (Damon Albarn, Lords of Acid). This album held in the CMJ charts for 7 weeks and earned them a Jagermeister Music Award (Russia's most prestigious indie music award).
