Vicknoise was the alter ego of Victor Palomo, also known as Shelby Grey (DJ, producer, and co-founder of Factor City Records alongside Undo). Producing and spinning, his imagination ran wild and limitless. Inspiration came from everywhere, from the roots of techno and electro, Chicago, Detroit, house, and disco, to soundtracks and avant-garde electronics. A true connoisseur.

Unfortunately, Victor left us in September 2024. This album is dedicated to his memory with a selection of some of his best tracks on Factor City. It includes an unreleased track with Sistema and two tracks with Undo that were only published on vinyl.

DARK is the new DISCO #39 x Blank Wave /w Radondo

'Mr. Computer sees two figureheads of Dutch electronics pay homage to the voice of electro disco, the vocoder. Figi and Luca dell’Orso team up to sing praise of a tool that has crossed genres and styles and give the little metal larynx deserved limelight on their own three track theatre. Rumbling bass is shot through with crisp snaps in the title piece, warbling vocals rising as keys dance in this wonderful collaboration. Production across the 12” is beautifully clean and sharp, allowing the rich analogue sound and robotic lyrics to be fully appreciated. Of course, as happens with the vocoder, those lyrics are just that shade of bittersweet. That brooding quality is used to full effect by Luca dell’Orso in “Fire with Fire.” A bold and daring melody is countered by a tale flecked with sorrow, the brightness and immersion of synths contrasted by the filtered and fractured human voice. Figi flies solo for the finale. “Moonlight (Vocoder Version)” dips words in a thick mechanical syrup, a story of burning love recanted to moonbeam rinses and bending disco bars. A true celebration of man and machine.'

Following up the release of his debut album 'Heartware' in 2022, Berlin-based record label Bungalo Disco prepare to issue the sophomore full-length from vintage synth aficionado Vincent Fries aka Italo Brutalo...Our pick from the album is 'Free To Move' - a low slung and spaced-out track that blends synth-disco with a swirling, delay-soaked arpeggios and punchy TR-303 hi-hats and drum hits before unfolding into a tapestry of acid synths and saturated vocoder vocals.

Opening the VA is Bordeaux producer Costello, known for his versatile and genre-blending style. Fresh Flesh is a jagged and unpredictable ride, driven by fractured melodies and eerie organ strings. With nods to dark disco and minimal house, it sets an intriguingly edgy tone for the release.

CHLOÉ & Destiino – “Venere”
A long-time collaborator of CHLOÉ, Yuksek returns to his Destiino alias for an exclusive joint track. Venere is feverish and choppy from the outset, featuring abstract melodic clicks, hissing synths, chunky bass, and mystifying effects that combine into a robotic, hypnotic soundscape.

In his own words, The song “Otdavali Molodu” (“They Gave the Young Bride Away”) is one of the first and most striking hits by the Soviet VIA (Vocal-Instrumental Ensemble) “Ariel,” arranged by Valery Yarushin based on a traditional Russian folk tune. The foundation of the piece is a traditional folk melody, but Yarushin infused it with rock intonations, which gave the ensemble its distinctive and recognizable style. Thanks to this song, Yarushin earned the respect of rock musicians, folk enthusiasts, and even academic audiences.

Why is the song important?

It’s a perfect example of the synthesis between folk motifs and modern musical forms: folklore + rock, an unconventional genre for a VIA. The song captures the spirit of its time, the 1970s, the heyday of Soviet folk rock and a period of musical boldness.

Thanks to this track, “Ariel” transcended the borders of Chelyabinsk and even the USSR, becoming recognized both across Eastern Europe and within the Soviet Union.

“Otdavali Molodu” is not just a hit by “Ariel” — it’s a symbol of an entire era: the beginning of the ensemble’s musical evolution, a successful example of folk-rock fusion, and a song that truly influenced listeners and the development of the Soviet music scene.
