Since the 8th of October, daily exchanges of fire across the Blue Line have drastically changed the situation in south Lebanon. Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro, Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL, the United Nations peacekeeping force in the south, has of course been following developments closely, as the mission works to de-escalate tensions and restore stability to the region. We were able to sit down with him recently to find out what has been happening, the challenges peacekeepers face, and the ways the mission has adapted to continue to implement its mandated tasks under Resolution 1701.

Since the exchanges of fire began along the Blue Line on October 8th, the situation has drastically changed in south Lebanon. And after 17 years of unprecedented stability, UNIFIL peacekeepers now operate under very different and more difficult conditions than before. But still, they are performing their mandated activities under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to restore security and stability along the Blue Line and prevent the outbreak of a wider and more devastating conflict. Peacekeeping patrols are a critical part of this. UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro says ensuring peacekeepers’ ability to move within their area of operation is essential for the effective implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate.

يتواجد جنود حفظ السلام العاملين في إطار اليونيفيل من 49 دولة على الأرض في جميع أنحاء منطقة عملياتنا، ويركزون على منع تصعيد النزاع وتجنب حرب شاملة. أنا فخور بالرجال والنساء الذين يواصلون تنفيذ المهام المنوطة بهم في مثل هذه الظروف الصعبة، على الرغم من تبادل إطلاق النار المستمر.

As the exchanges of fire affecting south Lebanon run into the tenth month forcing thousands to flee to safer areas, UNIFIL peacekeepers have been helping the displaced people as well as those remaining in their villages with their most pressing needs. This “Salam from the South” episode is about the circumstances that called the Mission to existence and about people who were among the first to serve.

مدير مكتب الشؤون المدنية في اليونيفيل، الباقر آدم، يقول بأنَ أنشطة البعثة التي تهدف إلى دعم السلطات المحلية أصبحت أكثر أهمية في أعقاب جائحة فيروس كورونا. ولهذه الغاية، يضيف آدم أن 165 ألف دولار، أي ما يوازي نحو ثلث أموال اليونيفيل المخصصة لمختلف المشاريع الإنسانية في العام 2020، تم إنفاقها في مشاريع مجتمعية تتعامل مع الوباء. إضافةً إلى ذلك، تقدم العديد من الوحدات العاملة ضمن اليونيفيل المساعدة للأهلي في جنوب لبنان.
