Genix, presents ‘199X’ (Chill Edition): a reimagining of his debut artist album, '199X', featuring chillout, ambient and drum & bass remixes from the man himself.

A love letter to rave culture, ‘199X’ is a departure from the sound that Damion Houchen, who we affectionately call Damo, is best known for. Through the late 2000s and 2010s, he caught the ear of Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk with his textured, melodic take on trance. He secured releases on both Armada and Vandit.

Genix arrived on Anjunabeats in 2010 and immediately became a mainstay in Above & Beyond’s sets with tracks like ‘Aura’, ‘Destinations’ and ‘Black Water’ (the latter written with regular touring partner Sunny Lax). From those origins, Genix has blossomed into a mainstay of the trance scene.

‘199X’ dropped on the label in September 2021. Since the album’s release, Genix has taken ‘199X’ to Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 450 celebrations at The Drumsheds London, Dreamstate, and our recent label shows in London and Miami. Tracks from the album have been supported by Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Gabriel & Dresden, Darude, Joseph Capriati and more.

While making '199X’, Damo was also listening to a lot of early chillout staples. He recalls,

“During the pandemic, I had a lot of time to listen to music. I’ve always loved chillout and downtempo music, I find it great to relax and wind down to. It reminds me of laying on the beach in Ibiza, listening to FC Kahuna, Hayling, Massive Attack and some of the chill out remixes Michael Woods used to make."

Shortly after finishing '199X', he set about reworking it entirely. He swapped acid bass riffs and pounding kick drums for calmer textures and soundscapes.

"I thought it would be great to try making some different styles too, push my boundaries a little and I feel it has made me a better producer for it. Honestly, I’m really happy with how it has turned out, I think musically, it’s the best body of work I’ve ever produced.” - Genix

Big news at Fckng Serious! The founding father of our beloved label, Boris Brejcha, returns to his roots after his time at Ultra Music and releases on his own label Fckng Serious.
On June 10, after a 4-year hiatus, his first original single will be released on the label he founded in 2015. In the meantime, he still contributed remixes for his label colleagues Moritz Hofbauer and Theydream. For the new single, he picked two songs that many fans have been waiting for a very long time.
"Up Down Jumper" and "Keep Rollin" are two of the tracks Boris currently plays at every gig. Tomorrowland (Belgium), EDC Las Vegas (United States), Kappa Futur (France), Ushuaia (Spain) at his own shows around the world and currently on his tour through Colombia, Peru, Brazil and the USA, these tracks are an important part of his show. Of course, the two tracks were also part of his latest livestream for Cercle live from the arena in Nimes.
Musically, we can expect a lot from this release. The title track "Up Down Jumper" is a classic Boris track and has 100% Joker sound. "Keep Rollin" also stamps its mark on every electro fan with its exciting break and driving sequences.
Fckng Serious is very happy about his return and solemnly welcomes (back) the Master of High-Tech-Minimal.

Veteran producer Danny Bonnici links up with fellow Aussie percussionist Dave Norris for ‘Journey to Arion’, their first outing on StrangeTown. A seasoned producer who’s in the past released on the likes of Bedrock and Balance, Bonnici infuses the track with its magic, the lush pads combining with the arp and wobbly lead sending the listener straight to outer space. That is until Norris’ crisps percussion draws the ear back to the ground, the groove turned up a notch.

Offering the first remix of the pack is Dutch producer Jaap Ligthart, who switches up the original arrangement, repurposing the main synth line into a buildup of mythic proportions, its simple, huge stabs combining with the claps to create an eerie yearning. The artist, with previous works out on the likes of Songspire and Manual doesn’t play around, bringing the whole groove back in at once at the drop.

Rounding out the EP is LA-based Ruben Karapetyan, who gives the track a classic progressive house feel, the strings and subtle transitions sure to uplift any dancefloor. Having in the past released in Mango Alley and Lowbit and his work remixed by the likes of Jerome Isma-Ae and Stan Kolev, Karapetyan proves he’s lost none of his touch.

For Maeve’s eighth outing it has enlisted the talents of long time friend Ed Davenport. The record grew from a chance hearing of some new material at Ed’s studio one night and after a brief discussion it was decided that the tracks would find a fitting home at Maeve. 

Although recently more known for his harder techno releases under the moniker Inland, Silver Walks is some what a return to Ed’s roots. Slower, emotive, more contemplative tracks, recorded over a pretty short period of focused studio time.

'Silver Walks' is a synth-led jam. The arpeggiator holds pride of place as the centre of the tune with filter tweaks complementing its progression. 'Kuromaku' has a tougher attitude - heady and cosmic with a deep kick. It means 'black curtain' in Japanese.
