How many licks it takes to get to the center of what makes die-hard hip-hop heads tick could be just what MR. OWL is after. The Pittsburgh-based DJ, producer & promoter who gets kicks from tinkering found electronics into tricked-out toy instruments has been turntabling & pad-mashing his way through the underground music scene.

He's equally comfortable ravaging subwoofers as a resident of bass music crew Obvious, as he is behind the decks dropping head-nodders at local hip-hop mecca Timebomb. Since 2012 OWL has also curated a podcast & event series for progressive hip-hop producers, now known as ENFORCERY. If that's not enough, every month find him running Pittsburgh's Soundcloud Meetup, a free workshop for artists & sound creators to exchange tracks and tips.

MR. OWL’s preference for soup-mix projects continues to define his cross-genre aesthetic. Mashing together a mecca of mix-martyred samples & lyric-rich tracks, his music maintains a fresh, independent-bred sound worth keeping an ear to - which begs two questions: how many licks did it take... and what’s the next flavor?

Formed in Chicago in 2001, OL is the triad of Spencer Lokken, Bethany Lokken and Ben Silver. This versatile trio has rocked dance floors from Hawaii to Maine with their eclectic mixes, from sunset chill-out to bass-dropping e-funk, and an array of other futuristic sounds. Theirs is a democratic mission: to expose as many people as possible to the artists they admire and respect. What sets Orchard Lounge apart from other club DJs is that you won't always find them in the club. They've built a reputation as a relentless festival and touring act, often performing live shows with visual artists. Not to dismiss their roots, they've played alongside heavyweights like John Talabot, Matthew Dear, Gigamesh, Aeroplane, Bonobo, DJ Krush, Lindstrom, DJ T, Jamie Jones, Booka Shade, Metro Area, and Maya Jane Coles. They've also had the rare pleasure of performing for thousands at world famous venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheater, The Hammerstein Ballroom, and Pritzger Pavillion at Millennium Park.

When they're not in the DJ booth, you'll find this musically obsessed crew in the studio. Always looking to experiment with different sounds and studio techniques, what the fans can expect is a unique amalgamation of sounds, from heady ambient sleepers to four on the floor dance floor destroyers.  Despite their affinity for live music, OL's focus hasn't shifted since the group's inception: to provide sophisticated and stylish DJ sets that are appropriate in a variety of settings...

Ghost Estate is a project of Josh and Virginia, combining their love of Celtic and Celtic-influenced traditional folk music with their love of doing things a little bit differently. A blend of synthesizers, electric guitar and violin, and traditional folk instruments comes together in a sound which has been compared to Loreena McKennitt and other modern interpreters of traditional music.

Virginia's classically-trained vocals provide a unique sound, while Josh's experience as an Experimental artist and accomplished composer for film creates interesting and original arrangements.

Universal Beat Union is a 3-piece progressive electronic/rock fusion band from Pittsburgh. With diverse tastes and backgrounds spanning jazz, punk, house/techno, classical, progressive metal, folk, psychedelic rock, and worldbeat, this fiercely creative trio serves up an intriguing blend of musical styles that suddenly seem to have more in common than anyone thought. A captivating symphony of three! 

Born and raised in Washington, DC., Michael Robertson, Brotha Mike, became fascinated with the effects of signal on audio equipment as early as 8 years old.  His fascination began with watching signal from a high current amplifier, burn, in almost promethean fashion, a woofer from a dismantled speaker. Sounds like a simple concept to an audio engineer, but very intriguing for a child—and so began his fascination with audio, its equipment and how it worked.  He began DJing at a very young age at house parties that friends of his mothers had invited her to—being the DJ as often as the parties would happen.  As early as 6 months into his 10th birthday, Michael began DJing at a small late-night club, under the supervision of his mother, in 1981.
At age 15, while far away from home in Sheffield, Mass, Michael began a path in broadcast radio, at a station called lettered WBSL-FM.  He began programming what was then called the Dinner Jazz (MOR) format, playing artists such as: Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy, Art Blakey, Art Pepper and Oscar Peterson, to name a few...  He also managed the station during his junior and senior years and was instrumental in growing the radio station's music collection through his contact with major and independent record labels.  He received accolades for being one of the best managers the station had seen in many years.  As a DJ, he would program a variety of different genres of music to set a specific mood and atmosphere over the airwaves.
During summers away from school he would apprentice under a DJ at WPFW in Washington, D.C.  As well as DJ at the station under the auspices of a DJ that went by the DJ name, “the 'Po Man”, who programmed Blues.
In the early 90’s he began to DJ at WCWS-FM, the College of Wooster’s public radio station.  While there, he became a music director that was charged with listening and categorising obscure college format music which included electronic music that ultimately was place in broadcast rotation.
After moving from Columbus, Ohio to Pittsburgh, Michael had begun DJing at WRCT, the Carnegie Mellon University radio station, he hosted a show called Michael's Eclectic Kitchen for six years. Because of the radio stations mantra of providing music that cannot be heard anywhere else on the FM dial, Michael had developed programming that was obscure encompassing Indie-Rock, Jazz, and House music throughout his program. His show would start with Indie-Rock and obscure music and end with mixing House and Tech music.
While at WRCT, Michael was asked to be the resident DJ at a Club Havana in Pittsburgh. Each week he would play host to a packed house, serving Deep House music all night long.  As a resident, he would play alongside such notables as Norm Talley (Detroit, Beatdown Sounds), Charles Tate of King Kooba (Om Records), Tommie Sunshine, Shawn Rudiman (Technoir Audio), and many others.  Brotha Mike was the resident DJ at Club Havana for eight years, his Thursday Night at Club Havana residency is still the longest running House and Techno club night in Pittsburgh thus far.
In March of 2005, Michael and his residency at Club Havana were a feature story in the local free paper, the Pittsburgh City Paper— and also listed as DJ/artist of the week. During the same year Michael had guest Djed at a club in Miami called the Harrison Lounge during Winter Music Conference. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Michael has been asked to DJ at many events in almost every club in the City from Metropol to the Matrix, New Amsterdam, Alto (as a resident DJ), Z:Lounge, and many others.
Today, he is the co-creator with DJ Scuzzi, of the hottest Pittsburgh afterhours night called Deeper at 1139 Penn Ave in Pittsburgh, which was later re-branded as Hot Mass. He is also the producer of the radio podcast/broadcast, “The Big Throwdown” under the Solid State Soul Radio imprint.
