Animix Forty One presented by Austin, Texas based DJ/ Producer Gi Gi ( @keptmale ) with a beautiful trip. The artist focuses on deep and contemplative listening in this xtra long mix.  

In their own words, Gi Gi writes, "the idea for these mixes is to be a collection of longer-form tracks (7+ min) that demand (imo) to be heard front to back, producing a patient wander of a listen, and to serve as a greatest hits of sorts of songs that are especially personal/special to me-- as opposed to just an attempt to show off the deepest digs i've stumbled on (a thought pattern i think i and many other selectors can get caught up in at times..)."

Love the idea behind this mix, and it's the perfect extended listen for a sunny or rainy day wherever you are.

"This mix was recorded in July 2021 at an indoor club in Omotesando, when lockdown was briefly loosen and was allowed to party at night little bit (maybe for about 2 weeks). It’s an excerpt of that all nighter set I have played, everyone wearing mask so was not able to see their faces but seemingly people were having a good time."

Our next guest, Lychee, is very mindful of this sonic potential as they build experiences through sound. Hailing from the east coast of the US, they have established themselves locally and internationally through their excellently crafted sets and tastefully curated project Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series, annual zine, and occasional event platform. Lychee's sound is ever-evolving, exploratory, and effervescent. Their Unrush contribution takes us through a myriad of moods and styles while still keeping a singular unified voice throughout. A perfect accompaniment to the first signs of fall as we reflect on the past few months of pause with a warm nostalgia.

A colorful and perpetually exploratory DJ and event organizer, they manifest underground energy with a magical, scintillating take on technoid psychedelia and relentless, meaningful inquiry. A voracious reader and writer, they ever-thoughtfully explore human experience and interconnectedness through words, soundwaves, and the expansive, wobbling pulse of the dancefloor.

In addition to regular appearances at Basement, Nowadays, and Bossa Nova Civic Club, Lychee is part of the Antidote and Meridian event collectives, and previously ran Spontaneous Affinity, a monthly mix and interview series and occasional event platform focused on how dancefloors have shaped artists.

To immerse yourself in Yu Su’s music is to give way to sensation, like closing your eyes to better feel the warmth of the sun. There’s a purity and lightness that emits from her melodies in which keys, woodwinds and drums melt into effortless rhythms. Organically groovy and powerfully transportive, Yu Su’s productions float between coasts, inspiring moments of reflection with their meditative quality. The Vancouver-based Chinese artist holds a unique perspective and highly personal voice, and has quickly gained recognition within the electronic music scene with releases on labels such as Arcane, Genero, PPU and Wichelrode. In addition to her solo work, Yu Su also produces under the moniker You’re Me alongside partner Scott Gailey, creating more experimental and downtempo takes on house music. As a DJ, Yu Su crafts evocative musical narratives which touch on memories and introspections, providing a small window into her world with every mix.

Recorded with the idea of representing the person she’s become over the past year, Truancy Volume 201 is a powerful reflection on Yu Su’s direct experience with loss and love. Opening with a Liszt piece which stands for her childhood, then moving on to an improvised midi-keyboard duet with her partner, through one of her very first records purchased after seriously getting into music, and ending with a track from a favorite director’s film A Brighter Summer Day, the mix, in Yu Su’s words, “wasn’t really curated by me, but for me.” It’s an honor to share this serene mix and a pleasure to have had some words with the brilliant artist.

DBA PODCAST 006 - RROXYMORE

Washington, DC's @tsurugi has been bringing lush techno dreamscapes to dancefloors everywhere from his base in the capitol (at parties like SEQUENCE and The Vortex), to Brooklyn (at parties like Cipher), all the way to Japan. Coming up through the world of bass music, his style now leans more toward deep techno — with glimmers of percussive, groovy, and playful sounds that remind us of those early bassy influences, and his (contagious, if you've been next to him at a party) enthusiasm for a wide variety of sounds.

"When it comes to electronic music I’m always searching for seductively deep, pensive atmospheres that swirl in full sunken subbass. That’s what resonates me the most where I’m ballast in a calm void before being perpetuated into a elliptical storm.

My hope for the mix is to represent some of those feelings. It was recorded on a few XDJ’s and a Xone:92 mixer on a comfortable Sunday afternoon."

Q. How would you describe yourself? (DJ, producer, artist, etc.)
A. I think ADAB is definitely more of an intention to be conjured then a singular moniker for a person. It’s an instance of exploring self/collective through an array of sounds from or influenced by cultures of color and the worlds they influence at large (which are quiet a few). It's also intended to be a direct expression of afrofuturism. A humble attempt to make sets and mixes made for emboldening and envisioning future instances of pan african and POC beauty in dance music.


Q. Any memorable club nights in NY? 
A. My latest memorable club night in NYC is also the last one I was able to spin live before everything shut down. I played Public Records alongside my dear friend CCL and it was a much needed gig/trip. We played a lot of drummy stuff we both love throughout the night and eventually ended on a Jungle/DnB note which was a dream to do with them. The crowd was super into it, outwardly showed love the entire time, and danced their asses off the whole time. It was a blast!


Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I decided to finally explore a lot of my 90-100 bpm percussive stuff that I’ve accumulated over time for this one. Up until now almost all my mixes have been above or around 130 bpm so it was nice to slow it down and mess around with this section of my collection. Definitely intended to be a psychedelic hip churner! There's also a few dear homies like CCL, Flora FM, Ali Berger, & Russell E. L. Butler in here as well so big shouts to them for some of these lovely tracks <3 Enjoy!

A. The first party I threw with friends and played in NY was I think in 2011 at this bar in Manhattan called Stay. It had a hidden basement.

Born on the outskirts of Toronto, Farhan found his way into the rave scene at 19. He quickly developed a niche as a raver. DJ and co-founder of the 'Untitled' DIY event series, his inspiration is derived from shared moments on the dance floor—this can be heard in his sets, as he enjoys taking dancers on a journey through the various genres of electronic music. His involvement with Untitled allowed him to create spaces for like-minded dancers, the LGBTQ+ community, and allies. Now living in Berlin, Farhan continues his career as a DJ and is currently working with the Quest Agency as a booking agent. in cookie series #042 Farhan takes us on a fantasy journey through ambient, dub, breaks, IDM, tribal sounds & much more.
