We are delighted to begin the year with a mix from ASIP (Ryan Griffin), the founder of A Strangely Isolated Place - a label and mix series that has become a cornerstone for contemporary ambient music. Inviting him felt long overdue, and we couldn’t be happier to share this contribution from someone whose work continually inspires us. For this mix, Ryan delved into musical memories, crafting a journey filled with nostalgia and influences. As he beautifully puts it:

It starts to speak to some major influences on me over the years. Growing up on 90's electronic music, influential summers in Europe, and the formative years of early 00's IDM and electronica. U N R U S H is an experiment in sound, a crystalline vision of eternal pause. Through our record label, podcasts, and event series we focus on presenting a diverse array of alluring ambient music. This channel was part of a project of mine where I, someone with no experience with making music, never played an instrument, and only casually enjoy music, sat down to see if I could document my journey from knowing nothing about music/audio software or how to make music, to being able to make simple beats or loops. The twist: each song must be done in one sitting, and not worked on over time. Doesn’t matter if the song is incomplete, or how bad the song sucks - the goal was to sit down, make “music”, and then upload. Song titles were chosen ahead of time to be used as the theme/tone of the “music” I was sitting down to make, or by just taking the first words that popped up into mind upon uploading the “song”,  regardless of how dumb they are. 

I had fun. It’s interesting to go back and listen chronologically. I can’t say any of them turned out objectively “good” (a few got stuck on my head though lol) or anything people would enjoy, but I can hear pretty clear improvement between the very first “song”, and the most recent “song”. 

The results of the project were noticeable. The entire process was super fun, and I found an interest and appreciation for music that wasn’t there in that way before. It also made me want to actually continue making “music”, but learn it as I would any other craft and taking it much more seriously. I learned a lot about audio/music software, too; before, I was overwhelmed by the interface and the uses of the many functions in the program, but toward the end of all of this, i was able to use all sorts of things I had no idea how to just a year earlier. 

Anyway, in case any of you dopes wanted to know what the motivation was behind any of this “music”, there it is. I did a yearlong experiment to see how fast I could go from a musically-reta*ded person to a musically-challenged person that can make a loop.
