Function lays down the Sandwell District style on this week's RA podcast.

Over the space of the last four years, Sandwell District have managed to carve out a place in the hearts of techno fans worldwide with their austere minimalist sound aesthetic. The label was actually founded by Birmingham-based Peter Sutton (AKA Female) back in 2002, but lay stagnant until it was revitalised with two releases from Sutton three years later. It has since developed into an international effort, with the Sandwell artist roster sharing the label managing responsibilities.

One member of their American wing is David Sumner (AKA Function), who got his first break via a trio of techno twelves for Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. Sumner then went on to launch his own label under the Infrastructure banner, releasing a flurry of his own material before getting in contact with Sutton's Downwards bedfellows Regis and Ian J. Richardson to sign some of their tracks. Their relationship has since grown, with Sumner becoming a fully-fledged member of their techno alliance and using it as a platform for his claustrophobic Sähkö-esque minimalism and bleakly hypnotic warehouse techno. For this RA podcast, Regis and Sumner picked the tracks, while Sumner did the mixing, and, as you might expect, it's a journey deep into the world of techno.

What have you been working on recently?

Finishing up a new Function 12-inch that will form the basis of an album and John's finishing a new Silent Servant 12-inch. Regis has been working with Ancient Methods on a 12-inch for DN.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at our studio in Berlin, Regis and I decided on the records together but it then made more sense to just have me do the physical mix. I had set up a chain that included Ableton, turntables, hardware and effects.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

I think the idea was to somehow represent what we have been doing live/out over the past year (this was a challenge to do in one hour as we play between three and five hours as a rule). From the outset it was about creating tension.

Sandwell District seems to have its basis in a lineage of anonymous techno production. Yet you consent to interviews, do podcasts, etc. How do you walk that tightrope effectively?

I think that's maybe a misconception as artist names do appear on the label. People may come to that conclusion due to operational methods we sometimes employ, as an example, artist names are sometimes added onto a release a few months after it has come out (no doubt due to indecision at the time or some internal squabble). The N/A thing was an experiment in human nature .... probably.

You recently played the Labyrinth Festival for the first time. Can you talk a little bit about the experience?

Regis and Silent Servant have a reputed love for post-punk. Are you also listening to quite a bit of rock music, or is it all techno?

From Sonic Youth to Rob Hood, Einsturzende Neubauten to U.R and The Jesus and Mary Chain to Mr. Fingers there is a connection that makes perfect sense to everyone involved with this so-called label.

What are you up to next?

A Function longplayer, a Sandwell collective album project, a limited Sandwell Mix CD, a remix package of Function tracks featuring mixes from Ben Klock, Norman Nodge and CH-Signal Laboratories and a collaboration with Jerome Sydenham, among a number of other projects.

The synergy that we share with the output of Michael Mayer's Kompakt imprint is something that should never be questioned. He's been part of our programming for as long as we can remember and the label's wax output is a staple of most of our visitors’ DJ bags. Last year in fact they just celebrated 20 years in operation, which is no mean feat and most likely down to Mayer’s ongoing day to day commitment to the label and persistent discovery of new talents. With his annual Room One outing scheduled for the weekend ahead we got an opportunity to catch up what's new for 2014 and how sometimes being an in demand remixer as well as A&R takes its toll on his own personal studio time. Mayer has also provided us with a mix to outlay what we can look forward to in the dark hours of the weekend ahead right here in Farringdon.

Hey guys how are ya.

Here is June's Psy Trance mix. 26 tracks in just over 2 hours. This one cruises along nicely starting out at 144 Bpm with a rolling Morning Psy sorta vibe. It remains pretty tough from beginning to end with the melodies drifting in and out. At times swapping for a more Hi-Tech feel before ending at a pretty hectic pace. I took the Intro from a cool Ayahuasca doco I saw on youtube. Unfortunatley i forgot the name.

There's a nice mix of old and new Artists & Tracks. It Features a few tracks from Burn in Noise's killer new album which i highly recommend everyone check out. 
I originally put this mix together for my 2 hour set @ TripleDrop for our Bday's. Due to my own technical difficulties i couldnt play any of em at all. So better late than never i suppose.

The mixing came out pretty clean. I tried to give it a consistant energetic Vibe which I think I sorta did. Probably one of my better mixes I'd say. This might be the last Psy Trance one til I get back from holiday in September. I'll try Squeeze one more in during the start of July.

Bio:

Prolific dutch producer Roel Funcken has established himself an agile and meticulous sonic craftsman, whose output is as accessible as it is innovative. Most recently, he opened for Flying Lotus and Tipper during their last US tour. 

As half of the group Funckarma, he has recorded for esteemed labels as Skam, Ad Noiseam, Arcola (Warp), Isophlux, Marguerita and others. In 2010 Roel felt it was time to express his own work more cohesively. Since then he has released the full length albums 'Vade' (Ad Noiseam) and 'Mercury Retrograde' (Schematic).  More recent stuff are the 'From the Archive'-series, a remix compilation  and two fresh hip hop projects: Ndangr Species ('Night Terrors') and Brmstn ('Ventcha tru da Vortexxx'). Roel's sound is constantly in a state of dynamic evolution, bringing his broad love for genres to live in new musical hybrids that are difficult to tag. He has now moved to digital methods for mixing live, putting all his production/studio skills into creating versatile and dynamic DJ and live sets that traverse genres and keep the sound fresh for today's evolving listening platform. 

Next Year roel is going on tour tru Japan with Videotroopers.

There was a problem with the recorder that caused a second-long dropout in the left channel every 20 seconds. I did a manual fix by copying over the audio from the right channel to fill the gaps; IMO it's almost unnoticeable, unless you're listening for it. I also did a more elaborate fix that papers over those moments, BUT the mix ended up losing some dynamics and stereo separation. I prefer the one uploaded here, but if you find the glitches too distracting, you can download the other version from the link below.

Four hours and 20 minutes recorded at Es Claustre, Maó, Menorca (May 30, 2025). Pulled out a lot of all-time faves. A tiny bit chagrined at putting so many "big" tracks into one set, but hey. Sometimes you just wanna hear what you wanna hear.

“You die in the manner of your living.” - Stephen Jenkinson teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School, founded in 2010. With Master’s degrees from Harvard University (Theology) and the University of Toronto (Social Work), he is revolutionizing grief and dying in North America. Stephen is redefining what it means to live, and die, well. Apprenticed to a master storyteller, he has worked extensively with dying people and their families, is former program director in a major Canadian hospital, former assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school, consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations and educator and advocate in the helping professions. He is also a sculptor, traditional canoe builder whose house won a Governor General’s Award for architecture.
He is the author of Die Wise: A Manifesto for Sanity and Soul (2015), Homecoming: The Haiku Sessions – a live recorded teaching (2013), How it All Could Be: A work book for dying people and those who love them (2009), Angel and Executioner: Grief and the Love of Life – a live recorded teaching (2009), and Money and The Soul’s Desires: A Meditation (2002), and contributing author to Palliative Care – Core Skills and Clinical Competencies (2007).
Stephen Jenkinson is also the subject of the feature length documentary film Griefwalker (National Film Board of Canada, 2008), a lyrical, poetic portrait of his work with dying people.

This is one of the more schizophrenic mixes I've ever recorded, but that's appropriate, I suppose, given the subject matter. The introduction comes from the 1972 film adaptation of Alvin Toffler's book Future Shock, narrated by Orson Welles. I actually watched the film when I was still in grade school—just 12 or 13 years old, as I recall. I suppose some well-meaning teacher wanted to teach us to think critically about media and technology, but at that age, I remember feeling only baffled. Today, the film (which you can watch on YouTube, appropriately enough)feels both comically dated and woefully prescient. That collision of sensations dictated the overall shape of the mix, which leans heavily on broken-down techno and tangled retro-futurism. Instead of the streamlined designs and elegant circuitry that electronic music has supposedly promised, this mix is all about shuddering gears and time out of joint.

The majority of it was mixed with vinyl, using two Technics 1210s and an Allen &amp; Heath mixer; the final two tracks, along with additional passages taken from the film, were added in Ableton at the end. Ironically, as difficult as mixing some of the tracks proved, figuring out how to close it all out was infinitely harder. Just like the film says, "Every day we're bombarded by choices, we need to make instant decisions, we're in endless combat with our own environment 
with all its pace and variety, its choice and over-choice."

Recorded at Berlin's Horst nightclub on November 2, 2012, opening for Midland and Kyle Hall. There's a bit of digital clipping at a few points towards the end, but I liked the track and the ones following it enough that I decided to leave it in. (The set went on for another 30 minutes, but the clipping was pervasive by that point, so I faded out this edit of the set at a natural breaking point. Alas.)

Patrick Anthony and Dumstruc's "Tag your it mix". Made in March 2009 at casa de Dumstruc. Tech-house, techno, minimal, electro house-ish stuff all intermixed. Clean mixing, with subtle music selections for the most part. Plus not a lot of vocals, but there are one or two toward the end.
