His mix for us today moves through several different genres and moods with a skill that we’ve come to love as champions of the eclectic and lends well to accompany those morning walks through empty streets or parks.

This month’s episode welcomes Reykjavik based Australian producer, composer, and sound artist @BenFrost. Early albums like Theory of Machines, By The Throat, and Solaris established Ben Frost as a frontrunner in conceptual, boundary-pushing, and sometimes aggressive electronic music — echoed in his earth shaking live performances, which themselves are celebrations of spine tingling bass frequencies and volume. 

Not for the faint of heart, his music is inspired by punk rock guitar, minimalism, and in the case of his most recent album, heavy metal, often eschewing storytelling altogether in favour of a visceral, physical musical experience. And yet, his work in film and TV scoring, dance, and even opera suggests he’s still interested in narrative artwork. 


In this conversation, Ben and I explore the different facets of storytelling, or lack thereof, as a musician, his new album Scope Neglect, and his approach to composition across these decidedly different fields.

Mjulev's ambient playground unfolds like a dreamscape; each meticulously crafted layer weaves in and out organically, drawing you deeper into a world of introspection. As you listen, the stress and noise of daily life melt away, replaced by a profound sense of peace and connection. Ben Frost's stunning performance from Unsound Krakow 2008, in St Katherine's, a 16th century Gothic church. The recording was made from the audience seating area, rather than via the mixing desk, to capture a sense of the church's massive interior and acoustics. At Unsound 2009, Biosphere and Stars of the Lid will perform in the same space.

'With this mix I wanted to experiment with some of the folk music that I collected during these years of traveling around the globe. I wanted to combine a certain type of traditional world music, mainly Asian, with a raw and enveloping ambient and electro-acoustic background. Inside there are aspects of Mongolian, Japanese, Taiwanese and South Korean music culture, together with field-recordings by Hafdís Bjarnadóttir from Iceland and electronic compositions by Eliane Radigue, Pete Namlook, Carlo Giustini, Loscil and Music For Sleep. My aim is to submit the listener to a different approach to listening to folk music, creating a soundscape that fully reflects the experiences and emotions during those travels.'
