"Marxism-Leninism" is neither Marxist nor Leninist; it's Stalinism - one of the biggest disasters to ever befall the left. Stalin was a treacherous, mass-murdering counter-revolutionary scumbag.

There are many traditions or tendencies among the left. In fact, sometimes just trying to wrap our heads around all of the rich theoretical frameworks and various anti-capitalist thinkers can be dizzying. But it's also exciting — the richness of leftist history and theory is vital to learn and to build our work from.

In this episode we’ve brought on someone who knows a thing or two about leftist theory — in fact, he's got multiple podcasts that go into depth on historical figures, theory, and philosophy from a post-capitalist perspective. 

Breht O’Shea is the host of Revolutionary Left Radio, Red Menace, and Guerrilla History. He’s also an activist and organizer based out of Omaha, Nebraska. 

Although his breadth of knowledge spans an incredibly wide range, we brought Breht on today to focus on the Leninist tradition. We’ll explore the fundamentals of Marxism–Leninism, as well as the related theoretical framework of Maoism. We talk about the importance of theory in informing our organizing, why it's important to learn about both the good and bad parts of historical figures and revolutionary movements – even when it comes to figures as controversial as Mao or Stalin. We also have a conversation about fascism in the United States, where we can go from here, and why it's important to center love and humanity in all we do.

Robbie Martin is joined by Max aka Compostghoul, a researcher and Media Roots collaborator who has been working with Robbie to turn previous Media Roots anthrax investigative podcasts into long form written pieces.  They start by giving their opinions about what was good and bad about the new Netflix documentary: Anthrax, In the Shadow of 9/11. Halfway through the podcast Robbie and Max emphasize how the recently unearthed abandoned St Petersburg hoax letters thread alone undermines the entire FBI case about Bruce Ivins, possibly the strongest evidence point at the current moment that proves that the anthrax attacks must have been the work of at least 2 individuals, but probably more. In the last third Robbie throws out darker possibilities for suspects, including the liklihood that whoever conducted the 2001 anthrax attacks had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks and was planning the anthrax attack before 9/11 actually occured.

The 2001 Anthrax Attacks 21 Years Later & How the Hoax Letters Prove a Conspiracy

The 18th century doctor, civic leader, and renaissance man Benjamin Rush was one of the youngest signers of the Declaration of Independence, edited and named Thomas Paine's Common Sense, implemented medical practices that helped the Continental Army win the Revolutionary War, made sure Benjamin Franklin attended the Constitutional Convention, and shaped the medical and political landscape of the newly formed United States.

Yet despite his outsized influence, the varied and interesting life he led, and the close relationships he had with other founding fathers like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams, Rush is hardly remembered today. That's because of just how close his relationship with those other founders was. Rush was a personal physician to them and their families, and after his death, they suppressed his legacy, not wanting the intimate and unflattering details he had recorded in his letters and journals to be publicized. In fact, his memoir was considered too dangerous to be published and wasn't found for nearly 150 years.

My guest will re-introduce us to this forgotten figure. His name is Stephen Fried, and he's the author of Rush: Revolution, Madness, and Benjamin Rush, the Visionary Doctor Who Became a Founding Father. Today on the show, Stephen takes us through Rush's fascinating life, from his self-made rise out of inauspicious childhood, to how he was able to reconcile an estranged Jefferson and Adams before his death, and what Stephen has learned from studying a character who lived through very fraught and not totally unfamiliar times.
