Lights! Camel! Action! – The Story of Stump is a documentary about Stump, the Anglo-Irish experimental, rock band from the 1980s. The documentary has been in production for the past year and sadly in November 2015 Mick Lynch, the enigmatic front man and lyricist with the band fell ill and passed away on 17 December, 2015. 

Stump were one of the bright lights of the mid-80s UK indie music scene. Their music was a dense, complicated, experimental repertoire of angular riffs, rhythms and beats which used shifting time signatures twisting around Mick’s surreal lyrical output. They made abrasive music but with a keen pop sensibility. They always felt out of place and out of time.

This documentary is more than the story of Stump, it’s a story that also encompasses the history of the UK independent music scene of the 1980s. It’s the story of indie record labels, satellite major labels and the mavericks who ran them. It records a time when the UK weekly music newspapers, the BBC’s John Peel, and Channel 4’s The Tube TV show reigned supreme. It’s the story of fanzines and underground gig circuits; big budgets being spent on recording studios and expensive videos. Stump’s story is also a microcosm of the wider social, cultural and political history of Ireland’s mid-80s emigrant community in London.

DJ Chris Case was a regular at many Tokyo chill-out rooms in the 1990s, including the legendary Odyssey parties at Club Token. One of the older faces on the scene, he represented a connection between the psychedelic 90s and the psychedelic 60s, and he offered a lot of arcane knowledge when it came to music theory. 
Chris passed away last year, and I’m uploading this mix in his memory.. I don’t keep a lot of DJ mixes, but I’ve had this CDR for 30 years now, and remarkably it still played. I’m not sure exactly when Chris mixed this, but I would guess late 1995. Most of the music is from Silent Records, which was one of the premier ambient labels based in San Francisco in the 90s. Sharon Beaumont, better known as 'Mouse', was a musician probably best known as a member of Psychic TV, for whom she played bass, clarinet, and keyboards during the recordings of the single 'Godstar' and the album 'Allegory & Self', and can be heard on a number of the Live albums recorded during this time. She is also featured playing the clarinet (as she does on this present track) as part of 'Monte Cazazza & Friends' on the album 'Live @ Heaven' from December 1984. After PTV, as well as collaborating with Matthew Levi Stevens & Act of Faith, she also had her own band Feast of Hunger, gigged & recorded with Bob Short (ex-Blood & Roses), and was later a founder-member of Ian Read's Fire+Ice. 
She was also a poet, published in the likes of Chaos International, Joel Biroco's Kaos, The Skoob Occult Review, Starfire, and Wild Fruits, among others.
