But then he sees my tear stained cheeks

And so I continue on.
And I hear the river sing her song
It comforts me Til i believe i can be strong

into the breaking dawn
Saint Louis' spires begin to glow
It’s time to face the music 
This i know

Another Red sky at morning
and it’s too late to heed the warning
You know I never did belong
The french quarter’s not my home

A boss is a person who exercises control or authority
But I don’t see how any of that applies to me

Cashiers who call me boss when I’m standing in the checkout line
I’m just an ordinary guy, I put my pants on one leg at a time
If you were a prisoner and I was a guard it would be okay to call me boss
But I’m just an ordinary guy buying some pasta and tomato sauce

I’m not your boss, and when you call me boss, I’m not sure how to reply
I’m not your boss, I’m not your boss, I’m just an ordinary average guy 

If I was the manager at the store who actually signed your paycheck
You could call me boss and I wouldn’t object
If we were working on a plantation in 1872
And I was in charge calling me boss is something that you might do

Maybe when they call me boss it’s a sign of respect
Or maybe they think it’s a really nice way to connect
But the way I see it calling someone boss is like calling somebody captain, sport or chief
If they could just call me sir, mister or Joe that would be a real relief

I’m not your boss, and when you call me boss, I’m not sure how to reply
I’m not your boss, I’m not your boss, I’m just an ordinary average guy 
When you call me boss, I can’t help but think that you’re mocking me
If you think I am the boss, then maybe I should get my groceries for free
