brain groffon stared into the cold, bitter diner coffee like it held some secret truth. “jesus doesn’t return my calls anymore,” he muttered. the man raised an eyebrow but said nothing, pulling his plate away from stuey, who had just reached for another fry.

“we need a win,” brain said, staring past the flickering fluorescent lights. “a real one. not this ‘scam a guy for a pancake’ life. i want respect. i want...reviews. new york times bestseller lists. maybe a netflix adaptation.”

“maybe you should finish a book first,” stuey muttered through a mouthful of stolen toast.

brain didn’t even bother responding. instead, he reached into his satchel and pulled out a worn leather notebook. “this,” he said, slapping it down dramatically, “is chapter one of god hates dogs — a tragicomic exploration of mortality, love, and bacon.”

stuey blinked. “so basically your autobiography?”

“it’s called fiction, stewart.”

before stuey could retort, a waitress approached. she looked tired. like existentially tired. “you guys gonna order something or just steal caffeine and fries?”

brain sat up straighter. “actually, ma’am, would you like to be immortalized in literature? i’m crafting a character loosely based on—”

“you’re not that guy,” she said, deadpan. “order or leave.”

stuey grinned. “we’ll take one slice of optimism and a side of forgiveness.”

she walked away.

brain leaned back, sighing. “you know, for a second, i really thought tonight would be different.”

stuey sipped from the coffee again. “it was. we didn’t get arrested.”

“yet.”

they sat in silence, the neon humming above them, the diner clock ticking past 3 a.m. outside, rain started to fall, soft and quiet. brain tapped his pen to the notebook, opened it, and began to write. maybe the story wasn’t over after all.
