Marlena Shaw - Woman of the Ghetto (Flume's Jackin House Mix)

I got the opportunity to officially remix this classic song to coincide with the release of a new Donny Hathaway box set. I was given the original multitrack master of the studio version (different from the live version)and it consisted of 8 different instrument and vocal tracks (as opposed to the more usual 24 tracks) 
When I take on a remix, my first goal is to make it work on a current dance floor. I like to stay very close to the originally recorded sound and In most case there's plenty to be reworked on the multitrack master to achieve this. 
This case proved a little different as there were few rhythm elements I could use to fit within current standards of club loudness levels. So I decided to take a slightly different approach, and add a new set of (acoustic) drums,  to bend the original Soul vibe a little towards Disco territory.

Latest from my JazzHouse Machine collaboration with Dexter Madrid - here Yusef Lateef's cool but funky 'Nubian Lady' from 1972 gets seriously boosted by a solid bass kick and generous layers of percussion. I'm sure jazz purists would be cursing us for this, but if it drags great tunes and musicianship onto the dancefloor, that can't be all bad...
