Biopolitics

The opening session of the Neoliberalism + Biopolitics Working Group provides a space for discussion of the lasting insights, limitations, and potential applications of Foucault’s The Birth of Biopolitics Lectures at the Collège de France, 1978-79. Linking neoliberalism and biopolitics at both the historical and conceptual level, Foucault’s prescient lecture series lays the groundwork for the working group’s concern with the contemporary management of populations through diverse practices of economization, privatization, and financialization.

Dr. Yolonda Yvette Wilson is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy at Howard University. Dr. Wilson does research in Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, and Race Theory. Her current work centers on bioethics and race. She joins the program to discuss the growing topic of "Brain Death" as a classification of death and what it means in deeper cases regarding race, culture and spirituality.

Dr. Robert W. Turner II is Assistant Professor of Clinical Research and Leadership at George Washington University. Dr. Turner played football professionally in the now defunct United States Football League, the Canadian Football League, and briefly in the National Football League. He joined the show to discuss his personal experience as a former pro and interviews with over 120 current and former NFL players to really help us break down what it means to be an athlete in the NFL and why so many players struggle with life after football. He also talks about his book, "Not for Long: The Life and Career of the NFL Athlete".
