I recommend that anyone learning to play the guitar listen to this piece over and over again, playing the Gm/B♭pentatonic scale in various ways, and trying to find a phrase that you like.

The volume adjustment during mixdown is optimized for the environment when using the earphones that come with the iPhone. If you feel that the volume of the guitar playing in this work is low, please use earphones and check the volume balance of this recording. It seems that earphones other than those that came with the iPhone do not have any problems. When using an Android device and when connecting an audio interface to a PC, I connected inexpensive earphones and confirmed that the guitar volume can be heard at a roughly appropriate balance.

This song began all the way back when Manuel was 16 and found love that summer with a girl named Carmen. He remembered her, though, and wrote this song about her all these years later. The title of the song means "Your name has the song," and the lyrics spell out the girl's charms using the letters of her name. Check out the lyrics and the translation below. 
  Using that inspiration, Manuel came up with the song structure and the vocal melodies to a rudimentary drum track with his electric guitar. He then asked Josh if the group would be interested in taking it on. Josh, never being one to refuse a challenging piece of music, and always on the lookout for interesting musicians with whom to collaborate, accepted his kind offer and created a project for the rest of the Eclectic Collecitve to join. He started the whole thing off by adding his bass, to which Ken added his innovative drums, to which Josh redid his bass, as is the typical process in the EC.
  Next up was JJ, who you'd think he'd grown up with Spanish music the way he added the horns, accordion, and piano. Then Stephen stepped in and added his psychedelic and intricate acoustic guitar to the stew. 
  It was all done, except for the mix at this point. Manuel did the honors, and did it very expertly. Stephen mastered it to give it more volume and dynamism, too, as he always does. 
  This was the first, but we hope not the last, time the EC has collaborated with Manuel, although we're all fans of the incredible music on his page. He was a true delight to work with, giving honest, encouraging feedback and helping us shape his song to meet his vision. We hope you enjoy listening to this song as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This was written over 10 years ago as a George Formby style (Google the name if you’ve never heard of him) ukulele song - a mildly amusing message to Gal to let him know that I was fully aware of the mental health difficulties he was having and that I would always be there if he needed me.

Over the years, we spoke often about the song but nothing much came of it until Gal suggested slowing the tempo and giving it a kind of shuffle beat. As it was about him, I thought he should definitely sing the lead vocal, which I think works rather well. (*Vocalist’s note: It would help if I could still sing…)

You’ll find many personal references to Gal’s life in the lyrics. At the time it was written, he was 63, literally a fatal age for men in the extended Reeves family and he wasn’t having the best of times himself, still wrestling with the grief of a marriage break-up alongside the loss of his big brother and closest friend less than a year before. But even with all of this going on (and not always out of choice) he found there were plenty more mountains to climb.

The transition of the tune from Formby to Albers is a story in itself but suffice it to say that Hans somehow managed to transform it into this rather poignant opus.  He has also made a beautiful film to accompany the piece (see link above). All in all, it testifies perfectly to the reason why Gal’s cleats are somewhat care-worn...and he still has many mountains yet to climb.. (Terry Reeves)

I watched some years ago a TED presentation, and I was impressed by an interesting idea about sheep and sheperds. I do not recall the topic of the presentation nor the identity of the presenter. Here I wrote down the basic idea in my words and made some extrapolation regarding our human condition.

"Smoke & Honey"

Ever since I saw an incredible Canadian band (Recipe From a Small Planet) do a live Reggae jam and seamlessly slide into a cover of 'Watching The Detectives', I wanted to try something similar. In this case, I did the opposite, starting with the cover, and adding a kinda reggae/dub section at the end, which starts at 3:15. 

For the dub portion, I enlisted the help of one of the best talents I know - @Llanpsych (Tez) - to add his magic and 'dubbify' the whole instrumental section at the end. I'm singing and playing all the instruments here using my keyboard, and some echo effects, and Tez did the rest to produce that authentic dub atmosphere into the mix. I recommend listening to that part at least with headphones, and hope you enjoy the result! Thanks so much Tez, I couldn't have done this without your mad skillz!

Sharp ears may notice the following 2 details: 

  -  In the last few seconds, I threw in the theme from 'The Godfather', played on melodica (see credit below). 

  -  at 0:39, you can faintly hear my dog barking in the background. I decided to keep it in, since she barked at the line, "red dogs under illegal legs", which I thought was funny timing!  :)

Great Awakening

Hey…. Thanks for dropping by. April 21st, fresh snow on the ground that hopefully will melt off by the end of the day. Yesterday, I was out transplanting some small Lupine and Columbine plants from out of the lawn. They grew there from seed that spilt from nearby flowerbeds. I put them into a rock garden I recently refurbished. I pulled all the rocks out, dug down to get all the invasive grass roots out, and rebuilt it with a few extra rocks. After that chore, I dug up several Spruce seedlings from the Spruce trees I planted here decades ago. Those little saplings grew up under a lilac bush, so I moved them out into open areas in the backyard. They probably won’t get to be 3 feet tall by the time I pass from this mortal coil, as I am old, but I plant them anyway b/c they’ll most likely still be here when I am gone. Ha. I have been transplanting a lot of volunteer flower plants into my neighbor’s yard, from my vegetable garden in preparation for Spring planting. They find their way into the garden, by wind, bird or however, and I just let them grow, but soon there’s more flowers than vegetables, so I find them new homes. Lastly, I replaced the wonky wheel and axle assembly on my old wheelbarrow, held together by hose clamps, during a snowy day last week, with a wheel from a wheelbarrow I recently got from a pile of free stuff (junk) out on the road, that a neighbor was tossing out. The barrow was cracked, but the wheel/axle were fine. Now I am ready to roll. That is how Spring is here in the mountains…. So several years back, there was quite a large pack of dogs that would freely run around our rural neighborhood. They lived here and loved being able to roam. When I first saw them on my way to the mailbox, they did not know me, and several dogs growled at me. (Rightly so.) Ha. It was a standoff moment for sure. So I just laughed at them. They were not anticipating that. So from then on, we’d have some fun whenever I saw them. Most of those dogs have died over the years. It was sad to see them go. So I included them in this song. I was struck by an article in the Guardian 10 years ago about a woman who used to hang out and work with the Rolling Stones in the 60s and the article was about adapting to old age while having nostalgia for such a potent time in her life. For this recording I had to change one word - 70 to 80. Musically it needed to be rhythmic but melancholic: something you got from major and minor seventh songs in the mid 70s as disco kicked in
