Let Her Go

Well I was sitting in the lobby of the Commodore hotel 
When in walked a woman I used to know so well 
She was, looking like a million after all these years

As she walked across the room, to the reception desk 
A strange kind of feeling came into my chest 
And all them old memories came rushing in

The times we spent together 
The day that we met 
First time I held her hand I never will forget 
The way she smiled at me for no reason at all 
Still got some old photographs from the time she used to call

Well, last time I saw her she was waving goodbye 
Walking down the road with teardrops in her eyes
All I could do was watch and let her go 
I just let her go

Sometimes I wonder, what it might have been like 
If things had worked out a little differently 
Could we ever’ve  shared this life

Through the years I must admit 
I think about her now and then a little bit
And all them old memories come rushing in

Now there’s not much left for us at all
Cause our shortsighted ancestors dropped the ball

A hundred years ago the experts predicted
That we would ruin the earth
But the people persisted 
If we could turn back time and do it all again
Maybe this time the earth would be our friend

What a terrible awful mess we’ve made

The old people speak with a gleam in their eyes
Of childhood memories and clear crystal skies
They say that once the sky was blue
And children played upon the land

A hundred years ago the experts predicted
That we would ruin the earth

Maybe this time the earth would be our friend

I hope they at least had a good time
They lived so large off the fat of the land

Our ancestors were shortsighted and now their children pay
Awakening each morning to greet the tainted day
Gazing out across an endless barren plain
No more amber waves of grain

Maybe this time the earth would be our friend
