Balanescu Quartet is an avant-garde string quartet founded in 1987 by Alexander Balanescu that achieved fame through the release of several complex re-interpretations of songs by Kraftwerk and collaborations with Michael Nyman, David Byrne and Goldfrapp amongs others.

Being well acquainted with Traurigkeit, I included this emotion in my composings of July 1992. There are darker and colder keys than A minor which suit anguish and isolation, but here the key suits the simple, plaintive melody, and chromatic harmony gradually brings other colours and feelings into the weave.
