Exclusive track taken from Olan Mill's latest offering “Curves”, released on Shimmering Moods Records as a limited edition CD / tape...

This record was completed on either side of a trip to Myanmar at the end of 2016 - it captures a time of total change as I prepared to become a father and relocate to Germany.

Built upon field recordings from my home and various work environments I found myself reflecting on places I had spent hours of my life living, working and growing. Layers of processed guitar, synthesisers and voice were added to create a time-capsule of locations and experiences. - Alex Smalley

Olan Mill - Bulkhead

Coming in mid September is an absolutely lovely, pastorally infused, first album from Enofa (Ross Baker), entitled, “Arboretum”. Ross had released a collaborative album with us a few years back under the name, Middlemarch. His partner on that “Wolf Hall” release, Dimitris Avramidis, also contributes to this new effort as well.

For Ross, nature, and the inspiration derived from walking among the trees in the park and nature preserve near his home, plays a large part in the overall tone of this one long beautiful track. Like the Arboreta, which are regularly crafted to contain a range of contrasting shapes and colours, which gives them a very unique look and atmosphere,  this wondrous soundscape of sorts, incorporating field recordings, moody guitars and synth, and electronic treatments perfectly reflects the calming and mysterious feel of the long and languid  glorious English days of the moment. Wind chimes…the crackle of leaves underfoot….the light, swirling wind in the treetops…the sun breaking through the clouds…put this album on and you will find yourself strolling there as well!

TRS078 will come in two very limited, physical versions. The first, deluxe handmade version comes in an edition of just 50 copies. Each of these comes in the form of a collaged, stamped and hand worked vintage art deco, tri-fold photo folder, w/original photograph. Within each are collaged, vintage arboreal prints, dried leaves, and other arboreal ephemera. Each folder is extensively hand artified, and comes strung with a stamped tag made from an antique British cigarette card. Each comes with an attached, stamped black envelope containing a factory pressed CD, held on with an obi strip.

There is also a hand made standard version of Arboretum in an edition of 50 copies. These come in hand worked and altered, black digipaks, also with factory pressed discs.

Tones and rhythms of MERS, SARS, COVID-19 and mutations, represented in audible space. 

LYRICS: The molecular mechanics of the pandemic. Motion and Stillness. Vastness. An indefinitely small quantity, yet singular, and profound. While we cannot see the invisible, we can hear it, and internalize it, and explore its motion in the stillness of the moment. Vastness. Stillness. 

Using the vibrational information of the frequency modes the drum parts explore the overlaying frequencies of molecular protein vibration, scaled to the rhythmical level. The left and right channel, respectively, reproduce the patterns of the reference COVID-19 pathogen and the G614 mutant.

BACKGROUND:

The pathogen of COVID-19 continues to impact the world, as the pandemic wreaks havoc and spreads arounds the world. As time goes on, mutations of the virus emerge, which can affect how infectious and how lethal the virus is.

And, there are also different forms of coronavirus diseases – like SARS, MERS, and now COVID-19 – all caused by viruses in the same “family”.

What is the reason why MERS is so much deadlier, but less infectious, than COVID-19, which transmits easily but has a lower lethality rate than MERS or SARS? Can we better understand how the molecular details of the viruses work, and if they may provide clues for treatments or cures?

It's in the music! In a paper published in Cell Matter, we have identified a strong direct relationship between the nature, rate and intensity of the virus spike protein vibrations and how readily the virus could penetrate the human cell, as well as an opposite relationship with the fatality rate of a given coronavirus.

The key result of our work is that both, the overall flexibility of the upward receptor-binding domain and the mobility ratio of the receptor-binding domain in different conformations, represent two significant factors that show a positive scaling with virus lethality.

The Molecular Mechanics of the Pandemic: Motion and Stillness, MERS, SARS, COVID-19 and Mutations

Ewa Liebchen is one of the leading exponents of the contemporary flute in Poland, having performed a wide range of repertoire, including music at the cutting edge of modern flute technique. Focused on chamber music, she has appeared with many groups and ensembles specialising in new music. She has performed and promoted music by numerous Polish composers, with many of those works being commissioned and written for her. 

The first album recorded by her duo Flute o’clock, Now | DUX, received a distinction by the Hi-Fi i Muzyka monthly in the Record of the Year 2010 category, and was nominated for the 2011 Fryderyk Award in the Phonographic Debut of the Year category. Since then two more CDs with music by Polish composers Sławomir Kupczak and Dominik Karski have been released, to great critical acclaim. The newest album Electric sheep | Bôłt Records, recently released, is her first solo album.
