This weekends disquiet project was to explore unintended techniques on an instrument.

I decided to explore the guitar and make a conventional pop song.  My thinking was that lathering the guitar in effects was a bit of a cop out so I only used a little bit of compression and reverb.  Only one guitar was used so that the timbres used were derived from technique rather than equipment choice.

The melody mad use of two handed tapping, a technique that has been out of vogue since the cock rock bands of the 80's.  The chords are played using touch harmonics, which makes them sound a bit like a synth pad.  The bass was played with a kind of thumb slapping style similar to funk bass players.  The percussion parts were made with palm muted notes as well as banging and brushing the strings.  I added a little slide glissando part too.  I would have liked to work in some whammy bar parts but unfortunately I didn't have a suitable equipped guitar on hand.

This project reminded me of how 1980's guitar magazines that had a little notation guide that showed how they notated all the possible guitar techniques.   

I wish I had a bit more time.  I feel like the track could do with a bit more polish and I think I could squeeze in some more techniques.

Disquiet Junto Project 0334: Mass Branca

I made 135 tracks of guitar for this weeks Disquiet project.  

The first sound is an attempt at creating a granular synth effect by recording 24 tracks of arthymical muted guitar picking.  

The the drones are about 50 tracks of ebow and harmonics fading in and out.   With enough tracks the fades disappear and it becomes a continuous sound.  

The next sound is an attempt at recreating the THX Deep Note using a slide guitar (The THX score was getting some press coverage this week).  I recorded 20 different notes starting on either E or B and sliding off to a nearby note.  I reversed all these and mixed them together.  The slides don't sustain enough to create a long sound but the huge chord fading in is kind of like the Deep Note.  

The next section is 12 tracks of funk done with guitar alone.  I tried using different length loops to create polyrhythmic effects.

After that there are 7 tracks of me tapping on the guitar rhythmically.  It sounds a bit like a sequenced modular synth.  Also there a 8 tracks of pick scraping and 4 tracks of harmonics for effects.  

The outro is a combination of all the sounds and has 135 tracks playing at once.  At this stage my DAW started to wig out.

Bogan Love

This week's disquiet project was to make a set of drum samples and play a tune with them.  The "drum" samples had to be played at the start, followed by the piece of music.  My samples included a coin spinning, some rattles, a few different hits on a gong and an 808 kick.
