Bio: What started of as a quest to master guitar at the age of 16, tought by a leather clad chemistry teacher, led him to develop a stubborn disregard of the beaten path, evolving into the artist known as Mack Aru! 
Choosing to dabble wiith unusual rythmic riffs and vocal harmonics, he experimented recklessly in different musical groups (Nia cawa, Imps, Puh Chi) to develop his own personal flair and feel. Improvisation, action and reaction with a rich formation of fellow musicians allowed a deeper understanding and respect for established and off the wall sounds and rythms. This was inspirational to finding his own direction within an eclectic indie poprock genre.

The Honkys! : Of Menace & Mirth

The Honkys!, Northern San Diego’s indie roots stalwarts, have been forging original Moonshine Music long before the current trend towards “Americana” developed. Originally formed in Huntington Beach amid the Rockabilly Rebellion of 1982, as the Bel-Aires, the current line up of brothers; Bret & Broy Hazzard along with their childhood friend Sean McCarty, create propulsive, musical innovations at every stop on their never ending tour. 

While [the Bel-Aires &] the Honkys have a long history of nonstop touring, playing with national and international acts alike, they have spent the past few years focused on capturing their weighty cannon on a series of analog recordings. In the studio with Thomas Yearsley (of the Paladins) at the helm, the Honkys’ sound has turned to a burnished country hue. The general tone of the Honkys sound has matured with age and even their classic Honky standards have taken on the antique luster of well worn saddle leather. 
 
While Sean carries the rhythmic weight of the band, momentum is often guided by Broy’s box car strum, which gives participating listeners a musical framework to build upon. The result of Sean’s Stand Up Bass line is a slap, click and thump to the chest. Often Sean will build understated patterns which will lull the ear, only then will he pounce upon the crowd with a thick wallop, all without losing time.

The structure built by Broy and Sean is set ablaze with the fire-hot fretwork of brother Bret. Using no effects or other technical wizardry, Bret is a true master of emotion. His bright, clean guitar strokes can turn dizzyingly turbulent in a moment; like a roughneck out on the weekend. 

All three Honkys! take their turn at the mic, each displaying his own unique style. Bret’s menacing yowl strikes granite terror on tune’s like “Moonshine,” the tale of an ugly bender turned deadly. Broy’s fractured tenor, on the other hand, brings to mind the balmy blissful splendor of a Hilly Billy Neil Young. He can warm a room with his easy smile on tunes like the crowd pleasing sing-along “Emerald Treasure.” Sean, the crooner of the group, conveys goof ball charm on brawny cruisers such as ‘Reno” or the party starting “Bring it On”.

While most bands wouldn’t dare to fill the room with a live set of simple straight ahead music without the back bone support of a drummer, the Honkys! go one step further. Every night when the band plays out, they distribute; shakers, wash boards, tambourines and cow-bells to the tipsy patrons across the West. The effect is an improvisational whirlwind which enraptures listeners and draws them into the mix. 

Even though nearly 30 years of polish have buffed the Honkys! sound to a fine sheen there is still enough loose jangle to keep things interesting. While each night’s set may contain many of the band’s original favorites spiked with selected new compositions, covers and attic-dusty rarities, the result is an adventurous trek through new melodic territory. The tuneful travelogue includes passage through flashes of dread and joy, sorrow and elation. The Honkys play good time music for hard luck times. 

Over the years, the boys have learned to pilot a stuffed road house through the highs and lows of an arousing set. One minute they may batter the listeners with the caveman stomp of “Walk Tall”, scaling the heights of ecstatic splendor and the next they will entrance the horde and provide soul stirring relief with “The Lesson”. But they will always bring you right back home with the locomotive jooglin’ and rocking chair comfort of “Front Porch”. The wonder is listening as the introspection of the studio has strengthened and sharpened the songs themselves, transforming and infusing them with new poignancy. There is a theatrical quality to the recorded music of the Honkys. At times it feels as if they have composed the soundtrack to the movies of your mind.

OCTOBER 30th, 1603
Ten days, three hours, and thirty-three minutes. That is how long I have been without sleep, food, or water. I do not know why I cannot bring myself to eat or drink, but I would give all of my possessions for a little sleep.

I lay on my bed and watched the walls of my room get smaller and smaller. The only sound was the ever slowing tick of the clock. The dim light outside my window grew brighter and brighter until i feared for blindness. My head began to swim with the light and the unforgiving boom of the clock. i looked at my bedside table and saw two books and a quill. The first book was bound in black the title, as old as time itself, printed on the cover. The other was a small journal bound in black leather. The cover was as blank as the pages it contained. Almost without any conscious thought, my left hand reached out for the journal while my right hand found the quill. i looked again at the cover and saw “the great queue” was now printed on the front. i do not know why i began for my choices had been taken from me long ago. None-the-less, i began to write. i wrote of the pain and suffering i have caused, as well as, the pain and suffering that has been caused me. i wrote of the pain and suffering my brothers and sisters have caused, as well as, the pain and suffering that has been caused them. i wrote of the sins of my fathers and the sins my children had yet to commit. i wrote of all Man’s despair placing it in queue to be dealt with in an appropriate manner. Or to remain undealt with still. This choice was also not mine to make. i wrote and i wrote and i wrote always anticipating an end that never came. All the while, the journal grew larger and larger and larger.
 
All at once, i found myself in the middle of a small wooded clearing the journal still clutched in my arms. i was, however, not alone. Her figure emerged from the shadows with all the grace the earth could afford. Her movement was fluid, like water emerging from a spring. Her hair was as black as the night we were in and her lips as red as blood. She was beautiful. She was beauty. i asked her name although i already knew it. She did not answer, but a voice whispered in my head, “Love and Hate, Joy and Sorrow”. i looked down and saw that the pages of the journal had turned to stone. The weight of which was too much for me to bear. “the great queue” fell to the ground at my feet. She moved silently always remaining a part of the shadows around her. She came to me. Her arms, strong yet loving, embraced my now limp body. i felt her lips, firm and soft to the touch, as they caressed my skin. i felt her breath, hot and sweet, on my neck as she whispered, “Do not be troubled my love. It ends tonight”. Then, the bite. i welcomed that sweet sweet bliss. i needed it.

Again i found myself in strange surroundings. A huge cavern engulfed me. my quickening breath echoed with the enormity of the cavern. The only light was that of an unseen fire flickering on the walls. Surrounding me in the air were the pages of the journal. They moved and danced with the rhythm of the unseen firelight. As the pages moved closer, they began to bite, tearing my flesh from its bone. i cried out, although i knew not who i cried out to. Some would think a great light came to my rescue, making all wrongs in the universe right. This was not so. The darkness surrounding me darkened and grew. It moved slowly, like molasses, enveloping all it touched. Eating. The darkness ate the cavern walls. It ate the unseen firelight. It ate all of the pages from the journal. Then … the darkness took me. 

When i awoke, i lay on the ground in the clearing, still in her arms. She whispered softly into my ear, “Shhhhh”. She held me. As i regained my strength, i returned to my feet. Gain’s mistress turned, as if to leave, and whispered, “Come”. i fallowed. i would fallow her until all that existed was no more. i would fallow her forever. She led me to her castle and then to her bed. There she loved me. Fore the first time I felt strong. For the first time I felt whole. For the first time I felt peace.

It feels like ages have passed since that night, and since that night, I have learned many truths. However, none are more important than this: with every new beginning there must be an end. Since that night, my eyes have not again fallen on the pages of the journal. Although I know it still exists somewhere, I feel it no longer. All I know is that I no longer thirst for meaning. I no longer crave for sleep. However, I am very hungry …
And now it is time to feed!

The Clouds - A Beginning

It was started from a jam session called “Miserables“ by Aji Wiweko -  (guitarist of an old school hardcore band named Empty Message), Agus Marrdian – guitar (Cambridge Revolt ), Aris Widyawisesa – drums (Cambridge Revolt), Wiranata Agung Tyas a,k,a Diaz - bass  ( ex.Subrooster's bassist ) ,Rio Vanessa a.k.a Echa (guitarist of Suck Of Society – he was the keyboardist of the band) . They finally changed the name from “Miserables“ into “The Clouds“ to represent their hallucinative and absurd but real lyrics.. They played pop songs popularized by The Smiths, Morrissey, The Cure, Lightning Seeds, James, Pulp, etc. Unfortunately, in 2001, Aris decided to leave Miserables because of his professional job and he was replaced by Ibam Atmanugraha, a  drummer of a jazz band named Protaque .

In a cloudy windy night in Aji’s terrace the dynamic duo (Aji and Marrdian)   started to play their sad interlude to interpret one of their poem called “Samar“ which inspired from a true story about their best friends, who were trapped in hallucinative and addictive poison and it changed their way of lives a lot. It was a gloom and depressive poetry but it was the breakthrough in Miserables’ musicography.


Most of their lyrics told us about the reality in this life. For examples: “Sisi Yang Hilang (about a grey area in our lives), ”Uncertainty“ (about boredom in our lives that could kill our feelings, energy and creativity), Prelude for Negative Minor (instrumental track), “Sepi“ (a description about loneliness and hope-loss that often comes into our days and it tortures our soul), “Garden of Eden“ (an imaginative poem about a nowhere lands,an endless heaven that brings us true peacefulness), ”Silusi “ (a temporer addiction of hallucinative substance but it could be a deadly poison if we can’t control our self-which written by Andri Mulyana a.k.a Cheppy – guitarist of ”Ten Holes” and a pop band named “Strangeways”) and “I Wanna Be My Self“ (an optimistic and egocentric statement in every human’s character).

The Clouds recorded  their singles in 2004 in a music studio in the eastern Jakarta and they performed in several indie gigs in the city. Unfortunately, in 2008, three of  band members which are Made Widya,Rio Vanessa and Ibam Atmanugraha stated to leave The Clouds,  but it didn’t turn Aji, Marrdian and Diaz into hopeless. They kept their spirit and tried to fulfill the vacant positions. They recruited their old friends, Rizal Hands a.k.a Ijal (The Forgotten Fear’s drummer) and they had jam-session with Ahmad Fadholy a.k.a Dolly Plester and Yodham Moux ,a music programmer and a lead singer of Jakarta's Japanese pop band called Junon.

 They  recorded  a new single called “For My Soulmate (a love song where The Clouds collaborated with Yodam’s passionate voice) . The Clouds then contacted their old long lost friend named  Ipang Bona Drag ( The Firm ) to help them re-record their singles   such as Samar, Sepi, and Guide Me To Your Door, Lelah Melangkah, and Silusi and to make their music videos.
