Motohiro Kawashima is a Tokyo-based game composer and DJ, best known for his work on the legendary Streets of Rage 2 & 3, which he co-composed alongside his friend and longtime collaborator, Yuzo Koshiro. His work is known for its experimental and techno-influenced style, most notably on the genre-defying and entirely unclassifiable soundtrack to Streets of Rage 3, which continues to astonish and perplex listeners over 30 years later.

In 2017, Kawashima was reunited with Koshiro to tour the music of the Streets of Rage trilogy in live venues across the World and shortly afterwards began working on his first solo album.

This vinyl edition showcases Kawashima’s first ever non-soundtrack albums, combining the previously self-released Prepared Wave (2019) and Acrobatizm (2023) into one package. Throughout these works, Kawashima explores and blends different styles of electronic music, drawn from his decades of watching Western trends enthusiastically from afar, while retaining his own unique style and the sense of playful experimentalism for which he first became known.

This game shares the same composer as Wolverine: Adamantium Rage. Jason Page. Who knew? Oh wait, the gnarly, testosterone-infused FM patches in the Mega Drive version gave it away. God, I love the brutal electric guitar in the intro theme.

Either way, the sound design in this game is underwhelming, and most of the compositions don't seem to be anything to write home about. Nevertheless, I liked this theme, and I really wanted to have a go at it.
