Wow! What can someone say. If anyone of you really takes the time to read my crap (thanks i appreciate) probably knows, that i had quite some troubles with inspiration and really felt like i over exceeded myself and my artistic vessel in 2k20....

So i really kept sticking more to listening and later on i had to take a complete break, step a bit back and i got to admit that i really enjoyed the off time. I was completely away from and with music, as i couldn't keep up with this intense pace and i simply wasn't able to draw any more out of that fragile "bucket" so to say.

I am really into Collaborating this year, so i put aside my (plenty of) projects and as i really befriended a few of you amazing artists out there, i got to admit, that it was (no offense towards any other closer friends here) the biggest impact for me, when my dear @texmex-shaman suddenly sent me this first raw version of the first third of what i can present to you today.....

It took me quite some time to get into it, but then it evolved, it grew into this wonderful thing here and i think it cured me... kinda... After busy months and going (wild again) with the arts for the cover to try to also convey the feeling into an image to show it to you, my fellow soundcloud friends and all other people....

..., it guided me to the point where i can now say "Here we are. This is it for me, after a long break to be able to upload again something where i put so much love and creativity and musical spirit into"...... This is also a declaration of love to Jim Morrison and his Spiritualty and his Native American Spirit......

Music & Lyrics: Jan Schonander

Not being a drummer or having access to a collaborating drummer very often I have been moving away from using the Logic Pro virtual drummer and playing the drum grooves on my keyboard. I have to admit it has given me added respect for the art as it is not easy (at least for me) to keep a consistent beat even for a few bars. For this I used the Vintage Breaks+ drum kit, but to get the deep sound applied the Space D reverb, which I then also used to give the same overall sound to all the stems. The bass is a Logic Baby Bass treated with a Full Stack guitar amplifier. For the vocal in the chorus I used a reverse Space D reverb to achieve the ghostly effect. Lyrically I think this song speaks for itself.

When Brian first played me “If The Stars Are The Dreams Of Spacemen“, I was absolutely stunned by its brilliance.  Of course, having grown up with his songwriting, I was already a huge fan of everything he wrote but did think there was something extra special about the song.  Knowing him as a brother, I saw just how revealing it was about his often uneasy relationship with the world and his place in the scheme of things.  The closing line, “Who am I?” said it all for me.  It was a song to which I often returned, particularly after he was gone.

Eventually, I arrived at the idea of writing something that in some way linked to his original composition but told the story from my own perspective.  Not wanting to ride on his coat tails in any way, I felt very uneasy about doing this, so decided it was something I would do purely for myself.  It took many long months to come up with something I thought would be a worthy companion piece but the more I wrote, the more the idea took on a strength and shape of it’s own until I had fashioned it exactly as I wanted it to be.

It took quite some time to summon up the courage to play it to Gary, thinking if he thought it was any good, I might take it further.  When he said that he thought that it was one of the best songs I’d ever written (something I really didn’t expect) and that I should send it to Hans, it had an overwhelmingly emotional effect on me, particularly since I was very doubtful about playing it to anyone else at all.

Hans always has a way of emotionally inhabiting the songs I write and the arrangement he produced was exactly what I felt the song needed.  There’s no doubt in my mind that if he and Bri had ever played together, they’d have created musical dreams that would spread throughout the universe.

Today, the 22 August 2021, marks the ninth anniversary of Bri’s death and I can only hope that this song does him justice.  We miss him more than ever.  (Terry Reeves)

I grew up on hip hop and have always been a hip hop musician first. Hip hop (and lo-fi indie rock) is the lens through which I always first approach making a song. After spending years listening to the music of our SoundCloud community, everyone's music has found a deep place in my heart. I believe that when hip hop artists first began sampling funk tracks in the 80s, it was out of love and respect for the music they grew up with and identified with. I now sample the music of my SoundCloud collaborators and friends to make new songs from those that I love. Tony Turn Around is a celebration of that process. It is a representation of the joy of sampling and the delight of playing around with cool sounds from musicians you respect and admire. I hope you all continue to enjoy what we have created as a community here on SoundCloud and Bandcamp!
