I was listening to Bach while reading an article on love. Then the phone rang and it was my neighbor Steve Fryette asking me to go over to his apartment (we lived in the same building) to hang. While walking to his place the Back piece was playing in my head so I stopped on the stairs and thought of the article I was reading and heard the song in my head. When I walked into his place I grabbed the guitar and started playing the idea so I wouldn’t forget it.

She Needs Love

This song brings back so many memories and still rocks me. A musical stream of consciousness 1st draft, that’s obvious by the quality of the piece.

It is a demo which I recorded on my own at my place in El Sereno
I played all the instruments and mixed it.

The whole thing took about an hour so I wouldn’t forget the idea and
I never returned to it.

I used a stock preset for the drum’s rhythm and recorded that first, then bass, guitar, and vocals last. When the guitar solo came up I sang it as a guide.

At that time I was reading Freud and Jung alongside a new relationship so I meant all the lyrical gibberish.

We were addicted to each other having fun trying to figure out our human behaviour, which explains why the chorus is a series of questions that on the surface are immature.

I have recently mastered the original mix from a cassette tape.

What was then is what it is now.

No More Paradise

While in Wet Picnic our lives were pretty intense.

We had only just arrived in Los Angeles from other parts of the globe,
met and played together in a band that didn’t quite fit and we were going to rock the world.

Trying to make sense of who we were and how to proceed forward as a band while our private lives were at crossroads.

The first time Gustavo played ‘In This Crossroad’ at rehearsal, it was gorgeous and clear.
Its mood and lyrics captured bittersweet days we are all familiar with.

This version is nowhere near the quality of the original version since it is only a demo that
was meant to be re-recorded and never happened.

A gem not recorded by Wet Picnic, so glad it lives again!

I changed some of the lyrics having had no access to them at the time it was demoed.

I Can't See Nothing

This song was hummed to me by Mona Lia Ventress with which I had a band called Il Culto.

When I first heard it she sang the melody to ‘na na na na naa…

We thought it was catchy, so I programmed a straight beat on a drum machine, then tracked the guitar and bass parts on my trusty Tascam 244 - 4 tracks cassette recorder.

She later wrote the lyrics and added it to the tape. The lyrics are real fun and easy to hum so when I recorded the demos I thought it would be great to include it in.

Since the songs stayed in their demo state and were never released I had no reason to tell Mona Lia about it. It was meant to be a surprise. She just recently found out…Funny!

Here We Go!

After having been exposed to local Italian, Neapolitan, some classical music and late 50’s leftovers that we loved like Connie Francis, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka and the very neat and tidy orchestrations of Ray Conniff, things were quite different in the Sixties.

Musical changes were relentlessly constant. Everybody talked about The Beatles and Stones. We began listening to The Who, Small Faces, Kinks, Troggs, Eric Burdon and the Animals etc… as well as new emerging Italian and French artists like Lucio Battisti, Equipe 84, Johnny Halliday etc… this musical revolution affected our youth dramatically.

Meanwhile at home, my mom would scrub the floors or wash the dishes singing older songs that clearly belonged to previous generations and, though some songs were current, they still sounded old fashioned. Unaffected, she kept on singing them which was both beautiful and annoying.

I wanted to rebel against these melodies and didn’t know how. We didn’t have any instruments. I could only fantasize about playing music and often pretended to be conducting an orchestra.

I really wanted to to rip these songs apart and rebuild them from scratch, an illusion that eluded me for years.

In retrospect, it wasn’t the melodies that bothered me as much just the way they were sung and the music and the accompanying rhythms.
