Yoko Shimomura holds a rare accolade, having written music for two giants in the video game music cannon: Capcom and Square. Starting her career at Capcom as part of their Sound Team, she composed for Final Fight, Street Fighter II and other titles before moving to Square. She might be most well known for her swansong at Square, composing for the classic RPG Kingdom Hearts before leaving the company in 2002.

As we find ourselves on the cusp of changing seasons, we’re reminded that everything is cyclical, the inescapable fact of endings is what makes life thrilling in the first place; the construction of one thing is so often preceded by the destruction of another. Perfect timing for this fiery Full Moon in Aries, the youngest sign in the zodiac, and who better to provide the sonic narration to this month’s lunation than Baptist Goth. Their gorgeous incantation casts an intricate web of light and dark, a gorgeous tapestry of found sounds and choral, droney, noisy, emo bliss. Long moments of contemplative calm, interspersed with erratic moments of chaos echo the sentiment that we can always burn it up and start again. Everything is impermanent, so savour this enchanted moment.

Kleingeld is a resident at Radio Tempo Não Pára where her mixes are crafted with rich, emotive narrative. Together with Cardboard Lamb, she curates a monthly series of experimental radio broadcasts, inviting artists from a variety of disciplines to join the programme in an exercise of inquisitive world-building.

Kleingeld tenderly portrays the chaotic emotions that erupt amongst the turbulence of life. Her Somewhere mix is a tale of lost love, confronting the stormy experience of heartbreak and longing. In fluctuating highs and lows, she captures the delirium of escalating change. In Sanneke's words, "it's about spiraling into depths, checking in with the void and checking out with the past"

This month's Outsiders episode by Meakusma is a beautifully ethereal mix by YL Hooi and Tarquin Manek/Silzedrek.

YL Hooi is the musical project of Valya Ying-Li Hooi, active in Melbourne's underground music scene and a member of Kallista Kult. Her music gracefully shifts between ethereal melodies and textured soundscapes, all infused with her signature dub production style. 

Both for live performances and in the studio, Hooi closely collaborates with Tarquin Manek who records and performs as Silzedrek next to doing a lot of collaborative and production work. He is adept at employing higher dub logic to the rough juxtapositions and seemingly abrupt left turns his performances can take.

Eleanor Zurowski, this year’s columnist, is producing sonic responses in response to each issue of Framework in 2019. Each piece will be an accumulation of field recordings, samples, lecture snippets, spoken word and contemporary music. For this issue, Eleanor is exploring the fugitive eruptions of, and leaks from, the body. Breathing in, crying out, rumbling, whistling, swallowing spit, belching, erupting into tears; extra-linguistic moments when our bodies speak for – or to – us.
