We’ve known that dogs can learn new behaviors through sound association ever since physiologist Ivan Pavlov’s bell. An instinctual reflex, like salivating over food, can be triggered in dogs through a particular auditory event if that sound has been associated with a consistent and systematic experience. Songs For Dogs works in a similar way, by associating feelings of security and love instilled while listening to the music with you. Not just any music—music designed to appeal to a dog’s unique sense of hearing. Pleasant and enjoyable sounds specific to dogs will capture your companion’s interest, and was created so people can enjoy it too. 

Why couldn't this concept work with any music? Dogs hear radically different than we do. Not only can dogs perceive frequencies nearly two octaves higher than we can, they can also hear sounds up to four times further away. Many of the panicky fits of distress and anxiety we see in dogs during lightning storms and fireworks shows are directly related to this heightened sensitivity to sound. One of the most prevalent components that give music life and energy are its dynamics—the vast range between loud and soft volumes in music. Humans love dynamics—it’s what gives music a sense of energy and flow. However, because a dogs sense of hearing is so much more sensitive than our own, these dynamics made for our own enjoyment can easily overwhelm them. That’s why leaving the television, radio or your favorite artist playing on the stereo isn’t ideal for creating a pleasurable environment for your dog. Both the frequency and dynamic range of what’s being played are too unpredictable and have a good chance of including the types of frequencies or dynamics that can frighten your dog.

This music's lyrical and sonic content has been finely tuned to induce a heightened state of emotion in fellow dog lovers and access an internal recognition of the profound love you have for your dog. What makes this conditioning platform so practical and convenient for people is that it's fun. Training a dog can be very difficult, time consuming and expensive. Our focus in developing this music was to create a conditioning method that is easy and enjoyable for both the person and the dog, so that it doesn't ever feel like work. All you have to do is play the music with your dog and positively interact with them while you listen to it. It's that easy. Your dog will be engaged in the music already because of the sounds we used, and with the added affection and interaction that you incorporate with it, your dog will begin to automatically condition themselves to find comfort in it when you’re away. By accessing a genuinely true sense of happiness and love for your dog while listening to it together, you will convey those precise emotions that your dog will begin to associate as being received when this particular music is being played. This is how, through repetition, your dog can learn to associate an even more sentimental and pleasurable attachment to this music. It’s not just about creating a non-disruptive environment in your absence. It’s about making them still feel loved, safe, content and as happy as possible while you’re away.

Formed January 2015 by both classically trained guitarist Martin Dawson and vocalist Beth Stephenson.

As a singer she performed concerts with the Michael De Costa Academy in York from 14 years of age. Then with the York Musical Theatre Company to female vocal group Cadenza and rock/pop band I Heart writing original songs.

Martin’s musical career started at 17 with Sheffield rock band Deeta who recorded a single promoted by Sir Bob Geldof just before Live Aid in1985 with proceeds going towards famine relief.
 
Wider experience on the local club circuit with various bands including top act USA followed soon after.

Then a chance came to play original songs with southern based rockers December Rose who recorded an album who toured the UK promoting it, but due to management problems lost out on being signed so decided to leave and create a home studio to write songs to gain a publishing deal, some being accepted along with three instrumental albums for use on film scores and advertising.

Current band Mantra formed in 2004 started as an acoustic duo with 2 guitar/ vocals and produced 2 albums and were first to ever perform at Sheffield’s West Street Live in 2005 and Sheffield’s Boardwalk twice supporting The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in 2006/7 but now perform as a full band with a new line up.

So wanting to return to playing acoustic covers this time with a female vocalist and only one guitar and vocals set a new project hence the new name Second Chance.

On October 30th, pop rockers The Chance released their debut full-length album, “Anything but Ordinary,” produced by Mike Bridgett (Turnover, Count Your Blessings). The Chance brings a driving pop-punk sound, interweaving acoustic and electric songs peppered with hook after hook. Following up the seven-song “No Big Deal” EP, The Chance enlisted vocalist AJ Perdomo as a guest on first single “West Coast Ghost,” making for an exciting listen for any old The Dangerous Summer fans.

Following the successful reception of The Chance’s debut EP, released October of 2011, the band spent the next few years playing shows around their hometown of Baltimore, Maryland with international touring bands such as Tonight Alive, The Downtown Fiction, For the Foxes, and Echosmith, as well as local favorites like 3PM, Something More, and Heavyweights.

Influenced by hometown heroes, All Time Low, and much of the Baltimore pop-punk scene, The Chance show off their own brand of edgy pop, wall-of-sound punk and acoustic rock. While Collin Athas delivers his words about regretful love and strums Mraz-esque guitar, Chaz Brown thrashes the electric unabashedly and Jack O’Connell smashes the drumheads with abandon. On a record as diverse as any released this year, The Chance dish up a tasty mix of radio pop sounds, classic punk, and straight-ahead rock.

The Chance will offer physical copies of “Anything but Ordinary” online and at shows, as well as digital versions via all major outlets: iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, etc.
