My songs for the 6th beepbox tournament.

Last tourney I spent the entire time experimenting with samples, mostly from mother 3 - so this time I decided to do the same, but with good 'ol pokemon mystery dungeon instruments instead since they were fresh on my mind.

I came in 4th overall, but I scored the highest in raw song score (minus all forms of bonus points, which were a big part of the tourney), so that's pretty neat.

Looking forward to the next tourney, although I need a break and it'll probably be a while before the next one.

Made for round 1 of the 6th beepbox discord tourney. The prompt was to make an environment theme for a 'windswept ruins' setting - cliffs high above the ground, rope drawbridges across chasms and ancient stone structures all around.

I went for a bluesy pokemon mystery dungeon feel and used a bunch of samples from the game. Also birds. Birds sound so cool. Sometimes.

Way Up High

Made for round 2 of the 6th official beepbox discord tournament. The prompt was to capture the emotion 'overwhelmed', and the bonus challenge I went for was to only use 4 CHANNELS in beepbox.

Here is a summary of the description of the song I gave to the judges: 

Towards the start I was going for a more emotionally overwhelmed, hopeless vibe. The FM lead was inspired by Spelunky 2's cosmic ocean since that's a ridiculously hard challenge - and a bit of Celeste. Towards the middle I went for a more physically overwhelmed feel, channeling extreme danger and panic.

The first track of the Collision Course EP.

BIOMIMICRY is a song made for a mechanical forest - a seemingly natural landscape taken over by technology. Canopies of metal and wires cast shadows over rivers of mercury and oil. Despite the forests attempts to fool you, there is no life here.

Made for round 3 of the 6th beepbox discord tournament. We were tasked with making a character theme for either a good, neutral or evil character, based on DnD alignment charts.

This meant we had to write a bunch to explain the context of our songs to the judges. I've put the lore together with the song pastelink if you're interested.

The short version of it is that this song is about a dwarven inventor named Yoltz, and his story of settling into a new town, becoming a hero, and eventually leaving it for the last time.

Funkety Monkety

Beepcord tourney 6, round 5. Prompt was to create a song based off of 1 of 5 images! 

I picked the stormy one shown in the thumbnail and went for a 'journey to the final confrontation' kinda vibe. It's cutoff here, but the image shows a dark blue sky off to the right that hints at the location being a summit. 

Since my songs for previous rounds were interconnected by motifs and pmd instrumentation, I decided to create a story using references to them. I referenced mind bloom to show what the (hypothetical) player had overcome, way up high to remind the player of everything they've seen so far, and finally a callback to yoltz's motif with a dark twist to remind the player what's at stake...
