WANDER IN WONDER

The "Earground" project consists of thirteen in situ sound sculptures and installations for an extended open air, manually operated, playground for the ears, which was mounted on Strofilia Beach in Greece in August 2021. After many long lasting and strict Covid-19 quarantines and many protective measures for the public health, I had a strong need to create an interactive and playful installation, aiming for audiences who could participate by touching and activating the sculptures themselves, in order to listen to their sound. This work consists of research on how specific materials affect the quality of the sound created by each one of them. The basic materials of this project are reeds, picked from the same region, metals and ceramics.

We listen to the croaking of frogs which live in a well among the olive groves somewhere in Peloponnese (Greece) recording in early evening on April 15, 2023.

«vox poluli vox dei» is a study on the rhythmic structure of political slogans in Greece. The inquiry was based on an extensive archive of field recordings of demonstrations and public political commemorations in Athens, during the first half of the last decade (2010-2015). This sound archive could be titled “vocal performances of the Greek crisis”. Those public manifestations are considered as political rituals and as sonic events, emphasizing their relation to urban space as a performative field. 

The rhythm of slogans in Greece simile paradoxically with the one of church-bells: the definition of a spatial domain through sound, where the “community” is demarcated from the “Other”, the invitation to participate and the appeal to symbolic action, the expression of the collective feeling, their periodicity or their signaling of urgencies,  
all those are manifestations of the social function of sound for the symbolic structure of space and time. Slogans and bells “belong” to different, and typically mutually excluded, hermeneutic and institutional contexts (in particular, the political and the metaphysic), yet they both are soundmarks of the greek national imagination (“resistance”, “tradition”, “religion”), in a continuum that Michael Herzfeld calls “cultural intimacy”.

In “vox populi vox dei”, human voice is absent, as the composition is based on a series of abstractions and permutations [metatheses]. However, the work seeks to contribute to the discussion on the politics of voice, its metaphysic and ontological aspects and, partly, its social significance. Αs a hermeneutic act, it departs from a series of questions, as it evokes new ones: What is the relation of voice with the bodies that emit it and the logos [discourse, reason] it carries? What are the politics engendered in the technologies that mediate it? What are the limits of a legitimate/appropriate/just re-contextualisation of voice within artistic production, institutional scopes and political party strategies? And what effects this re-contextualisation can have, on one hand for the voicing subjects and their scopes, and on the other for the institutions that encourage it?
The work was produced in the context of "The City Talks Back" residency project, organized by Theatrum Mundi & Onassis Stegi.

This sound project is a collectively produced sound piece, by the players of SoundChain, during "AnthroGames" (ViZ Laboratory for Visual Culture, Automatic Transmission, Athens, 2020).

Soundchain (version 3) is an interactive sound game based on a sci-fi story. Players are invited to imagine themselves as residents of a future space and time, sent to Earth to perform a vital mission: re-discover and collectively re-construct a soundscape whose memory has disappeared. The game is based on co-creation rather than on competition. The challenge is to seek out and record a unique sonic element to add to a collectively built chain of recordings. Soundchain loops indefinitely. Players must first listen carefully to the existing sequence, the soundchain constructed by their co-players so far, in the attempt to capture the specified sonic environment. The loop evolves in a dynamic user generated soundscape. In its seemingly random form, particular snippets of engagement with the immediate environment and fellow players emerge. Individual players act as part of an abstract, yet intimate collective that interacts with the physical/digital world through a process of careful listening and sound recording.
