Lords of Velvet is a piece for concert band with optional choir and is dedicated to the royal family of Spain. The work has a solemn and majestic character, similar to a hymn. It begins with a brief introduction of the main motif along with the (optional) chorus. Then there is a brief transition without the chorus to finally crenellate back to the main theme, this time majestically, together with the (optional) chorus and with minor variations with new rhythmic motifs in brass and percussion, among others.

We live in turbulent times. The big questions about the future of the planet and of humanity find their answers in political decisions, willingness of citizens, media, art and all the resources of our current modern world. At the same time, people seem to focus less and less on spirituality. In recent decades, however, more and more mediums worldwide are receiving messages from heaven, especially from the Virgin Mary. This clearly shows the path humanity must take. This piece "Message From Heaven" is a meditation on messages from Heaven.

Message From Heaven

"Moody Trumpets" is a solo work for 3 trumpet voices and wind band composed by Johan Nijs. Nijs wrote this work for an enviable trumpeter and friend of his: Pierre Du Rochez.

Moody Trumpets

"Salut" was written in 2022 for the project orchestra Flachgau from Salzburg - Austria. In the sense of the literal meaning of the title, namely salute, the audience was musically welcomed with this piece. The work of medium difficulty is written in a classical form, begins with a fanfare, which is followed by a sensitive hymn, to conclude with a short repetition of the opening theme. Salut is ideal for the opening of any concert.

Salut

Some people seem to be surrounded by a luminous aura that makes you feel comfortable and safe when you are near them. It is exactly this magical aura that is depicted in the piece "Shine" through music.

At first through atmospheric sounds in the brass, accompanied by pulsing eighth notes in the marimba. This is followed by the two main melodies of the piece. After a rhythmic transition, the same melodies resound again in a rocking groove style. There is a real sense of euphoria. A bridge in the minor key leads into the next section. Here excerpts of the two main melodies are partially presented soloistically. Gradually the sound becomes louder and fuller. The exuberant "joie de vivre" is expressed through changes of key and a percussion solo with brief orchestral interludes. Finally, first the second and then the first main melody sounds, the latter however fanfare-like and in half tempo. The piece ends - somewhat surprisingly - as it began: with the depiction of the luminous aura through atmospheric sounds.

Shine

Composer: Johan Nijs

The concert piece "Snow Mountain Saga" was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Schneebergbahn in Lower Austria. The most famous of these is the rack railroad from Puchberg am Schneeberg to Schneeberg Mountain. Originally, the construction of the railroad lines was not to transport tourists in the area, but to transport mined brown coal locally. An elevation gain of 1,200 meters is achieved on the barely 10-km railroad line. It is not an electric railroad and was originally run with steam locomotives. Since 1999, diesel trains have been used for operation.

This composition won 2nd prize in the composition contest held on the occasion of the 125th anniversary. Snow Mountain Saga articulates the origins and further expansion of this Schneebergbahn which is still a very popular attraction in Austria.

Snow Mountain Saga

"The Journey of Life" was written in memory of a fantastic Belgian conductor and musician: Jan De Bondt. Jan was also the commissioner of the composition but unfortunately never got to hear the final result.

In addition, "The Journey of Life" is inspired by the life journey of a star. The beginning of the composition reflects the birth of the star and the creation of nuclear fusion inside the star. This is a process that swells very slowly, just as the start of the composition also takes sufficient time to develop. 

Above all, a star is also a beautiful phenomenon. The beauty of this is musically expressed in the slow middle section before seamlessly moving to the end of the life cycle. Depending on the type of star, it will implode or explode at the end of its life phase. Belgian composer Sven Van Calster chose the latter in this composition.

The Journey Of Life

When music becomes love, with these few words one could describe the story told in the following piece.

It is the story of Viktoria and Matthias, who met at a music festival in Burgenland (Austria) as members of several Styrian concert bands (Austria). They fell in love with each other, but had to experience this love as a long-distance relationship. Viktoria at home in Styria, Mathias as a forester in Bad Goisern. Viktoria eventually followed him to Upper Austria, to Bad Goisern, and ended up as a conductor with the local "Gebirgsmusik." 

"When Music Becomes Love" begins with dawn and the announcement of the music festival, which is musically realized by a festive march. The centerpiece of the composition is a ballad, heard first as a flugelhorn solo and then in the full band. Very romantic, but also somewhat melancholy because of the long-distance relationship. In the next transition, the two folk songs and the wedding song "Die Sonne neiget sich" are incorporated in very short quotations. After this, the composition ends again, with the theme of the festive march heard in the beginning. It symbolizes the wedding celebration, which became a great feast of love and music, not least due to the participation of three concert bands.

Composer: André Waignein

When André Waignein learned of a very talented tuba player from France named Thomas Leleu, he decided this was the time to complete his cycle of works for solo instrument and concert band. As Leleu is a virtuoso, Waignein had to write a complex and challenging solo tuba part. The piece consists of some lyrical and beautiful melodic phrases, but of course also contains challenging fast sections where the soloist can show his or her technical skills! The recording of the solo, used on the CD Tierolff for Band no. 35, was played by Thomas Leleu himself with the accompaniment of the Royal Band of the Belgian Air Force, conducted by Matty Cilissen and recorded in Beauvechain (Belgium) on March 27, 2017.
