Wonja (@wonj) is an elite level record collector. The Oakland-based DJ and producer has been putting together mixes for many years that are filled with music that is hard to describe, let alone to find. From teary-eyed Italo disco to her series of Wood Glass Metal mixes via world music and more club ready sounds, she is a Jedi-level digger who also occasionally produces solo, or with partner Dan as Motoko & Myers. Her main priority, though, is to devour and share as much music as possible.

This week's podcast is a two hour trip to the outer edges of Wonja's collection that her partner describes as "hard sci-fi party tracks." It is a wide open and spacious selection where alien details, solar pulses and cosmic motifs all drift by as scattered percussion only hints at the most skeletal rhythms. Nothing about the tracks is at all familiar, and all genre terms are redundant. Even when more propulsive grooves do arrive, the sound sources are wonderfully weird and abstract, yet the desire to dance is as primal and compelling as ever. Few mixes are as full of WTF?! moments as this one.

music_is brings you Brera Som Som by Amandra

Amandra, half head honcho behind Ahrpe Records, goes for subtly evolving and droning atmospheres. With releases spanning both a wide range of electronic genres and record labels: Nous'klaer Audio, AD 93, Tikita or Semantica, just to name a few; the French producer based in Toulouse illustrates with coherence his own vision of acid and tribal rhythms that can be presented with either bright and soft feelings or through a darker, more disturbed path.

Prorokini:
"This one belongs to a phase where I was exploring the sampling side of electronic music. Until that moment I was building 100% of my drums and ideas based on raw drum machines and some processing, then started feeling how it would feel to sample some raw external beats from a drummer for instance and process them my way. I didn't pursue that sampling lead much afterward because it felt like a boring approach to me at that time but a few tracks stood out anyway, like this one, which I'm very proud of. The synths are clearly programmed on the Prophet 08, it can't go any more Dave Smith Instruments than that, if you like them, go grab that synth!"

Brera Som Som EP
As always with Amandra, there is a blend of poetic and soft hidden touch given to the music through carefully crafted personal track names. Brera Som Som is a 4-tracker EP, recorded back when he lived in Warsaw Poland, showcasing the artist's ability to navigate through niche genres. It comes as a double 12" package cherry-topped with four intelligent and eclectic remixes from artists with their own unique identity: Shielding, Whylie, Martinou and Brainwaltzera.
