We welcome DJ Life to Ape-X for our 49th Ape Cast of the series. Coming all the way from Naarm, Australia, Dj Life takes us on an hour-long journey filled with House, Tech-tribal-progressive house and techno.  

DJ life has quickly made himself well known in the underground music scene with his up tempo trance sounds and a generous handful of releases on acclaimed underground dance labels such as; Craigie Knowes, Potato Headz Records and more, DJ Life & Reflex Blue have since then started their own label label - Progress Earth - which is now a solid platform for their own quirky impulsive tunes to be aired on. 

You will be able to see him around Europe this summer at both festivals and smaller events this summer 👀

MINORI OGA' her paintings stand out for their bold strokes against restrained color tones, and together with floating objects, compose a space of their own. The paintings do not merely pursue a tranquil space, but appeal to the senses beyond the visual sense as if the brushstrokes, the matiere, and the painted objects begin to vibrate with each other, providing an experience of viewing the paintings that changes rhythm and speed as they move back and forth. The "traces" of the artist's attempt to capture the very moment when the painting is impregnated with a heartbeat are emerging.

What characterizes Auger's painting is the brushstrokes and handling of spatulas and brushes (tools of the lacquer art).
The way she attempts to determine the state of the paint on the palette and on the screen, and to fix it in place, recalls her relationship with the lacquer craft she has been engaged in.

This music is a 20min sound piece for her exhibition, tracing her brushstrokes and matiere, and incorporating noise as my own workmanship.

Hailing from Amsterdam and with De School as his homebase, @nawazworldwide’s sound is always evolving, sliding deftly from wormhole techno to fast rhythms and glitchy electronics.

His selections on this Patterns of Perception 119 melt together while also reinforcing each other, each transition subtler than the last, sometimes even employing his own tailor-made tools and tracks for the purpose.

Beginning from a visual image, this mix blends diverse rhythms and atmospheres, offering a story line from which the listener can create their own narrative, their own image, free of imposition.

Music is an innately social activity, even music created in the interest of self-reflection and meditation. Early in 2020, Australia's response to the rapidly evolving Covid-19 pandemic had the music community close its doors not only to the outside world, but to each other. By order of a government directive, all social gatherings - including live music performance, group rehearsal and collaborative recording - were to cease around the country.

It was unclear at the start of the pandemic what role peer-to-peer interaction played in the lives of Australian composers. Many already worked from home, well versed in the art of creating spaces of solitude in cities, of building environments conducive to self-reflection, innovation and creativity.

But how much do we really depend upon our community? In a world where self-isolation is no longer a personal choice, will creativity flounder, or flourish?

The recordings in this series are a document of these months and these reflections. A meditation on the way we exist and create, both together and in solitude. As with any creative work, it is up to the listener to draw what they will from these works, and to carry this forward into the world they now inhabit.

New releases will be added ongoing 1 by 1, fortnightly from October. Depending on how long this V2 lockdown goes, we may add even more. Who knows, we may continue this until 2022, forever in hibernation and isolation, yet not isolated.
