Penelo Leaves the Party is an art project started by Jemal Young. The project uses post-digital music and still and moving images to make artifacts that invoke the magic of early metaverse culture.

The project began in 2012 with 'Level 1-1', a set of five original music recordings and accompanying images inspired by the emotional color of bodyboarding and playing fourth and fifth generation video games. In 2014, Jemal supplemented 'Level 1-1' with a remix of "Road of the Dead", a theme from Tohru Nakabayashi's soundtrack for the 1989 Sega video game 'Golden Axe'. Alternately titled "The Fiend's Path (Screamixed)", the remix is loaded with Easter eggs sampled from four decades of popular entertainment media.

In 2017, after learning that birds are formally classified as dinosaurs of the suborder Therapoda, Jemal began work on what would become a Penelo Leaves the Party music video titled 'Modern Bird' (2018). Designed to function as a museum exhibit in microdose, 'Modern Bird' combines an original vaporwave music theme with publicly licensed and public domain visual media to trace the survival of dinosaurs into the Space Age.

PERSONAL AWARENESS

Spencer continues to ask for help after he has tried to do things for himself.  For example, he usually says, "Will you please help me tie my shoes?"  During nap he usually talks to one of his animals.  He tells them stories and actively involves the animal(s) in them.  

Spencer is aware of personal hygiene, and often spends several minutes in front of the mirror washing his hands, face and sometimes he will pretend to brush his teeth.  

Spencer will break up his food into tiny pieces before eating.  He will ask his peers to pass items at the table by saying "please pass the milk" etc.

EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Spencer continues to use his words in conflict situations.  

Spencer continues to become engrossed in an activity and needs gentle reminders to move to another activity.  For example, when he is drawing and group time is beginning he is given reminders so he will have time to complete a portion of his picture.  He often chooses to return to his picture after group time is over.  

Spencer has become well aware of situations that can not be changed.

SOCIALIZATION

Spencer spends a lot of time interacting with adults and his peers.  He usually tells stories of various adventures and he lets others tell parts of his story.  He tells many stories about dinosaurs and Transformers.  For example, one day he was talking about certain foods dinosaurs ate.  On another occasion, he was describing a Transformers program, and told a group how the Transformer moved and he began moving in the same fashion.

Spencer will ask for things by saying please.

COMMUNICATION

Spencer continues to use complete sentences most of the time.  If he stops in the middle of a sentence he says, "but you know what?" and continues on with what he was saying.  

Spencer's vocabulary consists of many large words, mainly dinosaur names.  He tells many stories to his peers and the adults when we are talking about a specific topic.  For example, we discussed water and Spencer began telling a story about a shark.  He also draws many pictures that include sharks, tuna fish and people.  For example, he drew a picture of a boy taking tickets to enter the beach and a shark chasing a motor boat.  

Spencer follows instructions in a careful manner.  For example, while playing relay games he was sure to repeat the instructions to make sure he knew what to do.  He then followed through and returned to cheer on other members of his team.

COGNITION
Spencer continues to ask for help when there is something he can't do.  For example, he was taking off his sheet on his cot and couldn't get a knot untied.  After he tried he asked "could you please help me?"

Spencer continues to exchange events.  For example, during art he made green goop and he talked about how it looked like slime, but then he said "But you know what?  This looks like a monster booger!"

Spencer will work puzzles to match items.  He does not classify items by putting them in a pile or stack.  

When Spencer completes a task, he gets very excited.

PERCEPTUAL MOTOR

Spencer can successfully manipulate objects in his environment.  On one occasion he walked backwards to the sandbox clapping and singing only stopping to observe something under a bench.

Spencer is constantly using his fine motor skills.  This is evident by the amount of time he spends at the writing table.  He uses various writing instruments.  

Spencer is very curious about various things.  There was a dead squirrel and he was asking many questions about the animal, "Where did it come from, how did it die?"

That's why they decided to just form The Dinosaurs for the heck of it. People have been raving about this union for years and the awesome boys and girl of The Dinosaurs only made their endless pleading come to life. The awesome group is Jimbo Cuenco who plays for Paraluman, Asintado, Art for strangers and Imbisibol, Chii Balanaa of Dulcet and Asintado, Chino Villaverde who sessions for everybody in the industry, Charles Cristobal The godfather, who is plain awesome in everything, Geo Songco who needs no instrument to be cool, and Sab Milla, who is just naturally cute and sings so sweet, she makes you think Unicorns and Candyland. We've come to end this epoch of clean music and bring back the baroque style of playing, Dinosaur style. We so quick, you can't see us.

Description
Beginning as a art student alternative party to the mind numbingly awful scene that was the staple in Bournemouth at the time, Big in Japan set out its aim to offer some quality and fun back to the kids down on the south coast on a weekly thursday night. Six hundred plus would pack the venue regularly which saw guest DJsets from the likes of Erol Alkan, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, The Shoes, Casper C, We Have Band, Filthy Dukes & Skull Juice play alongside regular tastemakers such as a young Dan Avery aka Stopmakingme, Tosh Ohta, Zoo Look, Katie Dane, Hello Mozart and many others who added their musical offerings to a loyal crowd who were always up for partying hard into the early hours. Reglar exhibitions of work, themed events and general mayhem was brought to the party by hostesses with the mostesses The Plastic Hearts which gave the night its unique homegrown eccentricity! 

Whilst BIJ continued to ruin students art degrees in Bournemouth town organiser Dan Spinney took the party up to the big smoke and started causing a scene at a new venue which was really building a great reputation for new music and immense bookings - The Amersham Arms in New Cross. There the party played hosts to events with such guests as Yacht (DFA), Metronomy, Har Mar Superstar, PNAU, The Teenagers, Fenech Solar, Mystery Jets and many more.

In 2009 Big in Japan moved to East London and set up home in a Shoreditch basement on a monthly last friday which is where it continues to party with a more Disco, House led sound but has never forgotten its roots in rebellious fun, creative flair and a good ear for a great track! 

Recent guests include: Greg Wilson, Psychemagik, Todd Terje, JD Twitch of Optimo, Odyssey live, Bill Brewster, PBR Streetgang, Dan Avery, Jim Stanton of HMD, Ben Pistor of Disco Bloodbath, Sean Johnston (Hardway/ALFOS) and there is plenty more on the way as we hit the 6th Birthday of our little club night.

As well as the monthly residency Big In Japan has hosted and featured in rooms and tents at Fabric, Bestival, Secret Garden Party, Glastonbury, Radio 1 - Hackney Weekender as well as internationally for Hove festival in Norway, Garden festival in Croatia, Diesel store opening in Oslo and a few more that we're a little hazy on!
