1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between.

One of the more neglected films of the year was The Education of Sonny Carson, the coming-of-age tale of an inner city kid who moves from life with a street gang to fighting for survival during a stretch in prison. Directed by The Mack's Michael Campus and adapted by civil rights activist Sonny Carson from his autobiography, the film packs a more brutal punch than any movie from its time yet barely gets mentioned these days.

Marcus Pinn returns to discuss the film's curiously underwhelming reputation despite its decades-long legacy through hip hop music and influence on the next 50 years of cinema. Even with a messy aesthetic and muddled narrative, Campus' film is an unquestionably powerful artwork that captures individual struggle and the cruel reality of life in Bedford-Stuyvesant with the use of real locations and real Brooklyn gangs.

Jason was a great contributor & ran Concept Magazine out of Canada which featured our shows DJ's & top 10 & or playlist. My brother knew his music, especially the underground House & Disco classics. Not to mention a great Hip Hop DJ as well.

Some collaborations feel orchestrated. This one felt inevitable. Reeko and Mostra share a certain DNA - innovative, uncompromising, with an appetite for risk. One’s a festival, the other a force of nature, but both operate outside the usual margins. So when Reeko stepped into the cavernous Pavelló Olímpic on the final day of Mostra 2025, the match didn’t need explaining. After three days of sonic overstimulation, the crowd could’ve easily slipped into post-peak autopilot. Instead, something sparked.

Reeko played with the confidence of someone who doesn’t need to raise his voice to be heard. He didn’t grab attention, instead he tuned the room to his frequency. No spectacle, just sustained pressure. The kind that doesn’t shout, but hums somewhere in your bones. From the first mix, he had total control, not just over tempo, but over tension, perception, direction. It wasn’t peak-time euphoria. It was something colder, sharper, more elemental.

What happened on that floor wasn’t mystical, and it wasn’t romantic. It was human circuitry, bodies moving like they’d been rewired. A dance floor fully switched on. In a festival stacked with standout sets, this one kept floating to the surface in post-Mostra conversations. We’re proud to share this recording. It was special. Now it’s permanent.

Delayed x Mostra: Reeko

Next up in our mix series is Temple Rat - a Berlin based sound designer, Erhu player, and DJ originally from Sichuan. Blending traditional folk instruments with experimental electronic production, she incorporates self-built sound tools, field recordings, and deep, driving rhythms to craft her signature sound. With releases on labels such as Siamese Twins Records, Qilla Records, and FuFu Records, her discography reflects a rich spectrum of influences and sonic explorations. Beyond her solo work, Temple Rat co-runs the collectives Er Ting Ba Fang (耳聽八方) and Jia La, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration through music.

This mix is a one-hour live set of unreleased and forthcoming productions, recorded at RSO Berlin in September via Deestricted. Metallic and mineral soundscapes collide with fluid, watery tones, drenched in acid grooves and propelled by laser-sharp samples and percussion. A journey for deep listening, where textures shimmer and drones align for true hypnotism.
