“What Do You Say” is about how I felt when visiting my step-father in the hospital, knowing he didn’t have much time left.  Everything I could think to talk about seemed really shallow, but I didn’t know what else I could say.  In the end, I realized that it didn’t matter if I said anything.  What mattered was being present. 

The song speaks about specific details about his life, (Daytona, the pits at the racetrack), but also to the bigger picture of facing the end of life with someone you love.

I released two versions of the song, one featuring piano, and one featuring acoustic guitar, because I took a vote at my house and we were split down the middle on which one we liked best.  To which I thought, “Why not release both and have the listeners decide which they liked best?”  I also thought it would be an interesting way to market the song by polling the audience in each promotion I create for it.  I’m not aware of anyone else doing this, so I thought it would be a neat angle on it.

What Do You Say -Piano Version

Nearly everyone can relate to the relaxing feeling of having their toes in the sand and the sun warming their bodies at the beach.  However, the anticipation is half the excitement of getting to that destination.  An inviting breeze and some cold drinks are a universal feeling of freedom and adventure.  This is a song for the drive to escape to that happy place.

One of my favorite all time albums, I wanted everyone to have a chance to hear it since it's not available for purchase anywhere. I believe it was released in 1991, locally.

This song was inspired by the Covid-19 quarantine shutting down the economy, and in particular, the live music scene.  I had plans to go see my new favorite band, “The Interrupters” in 2020, but essentially all shows have been cancelled for the year.  Obviously, everyone was bummed by this, but the song ends by pointing out that shows will go on again at some point.  It’s just a question of when.

The Interruption

“2 Months” is an introspective song about knowing that your time in life is finite.  I was inspired to finish it quickly, after talking to a gentleman who wanted to hire our cover band for his 90th birthday party.  I had called him in December 2020, to see if he still wanted to have us at his party in February.  With Covid-19 continuing to run rampant, it was decided that it would not be smart to have us play at a party for him.  However, it was also during that phone call, that he informed me he had lung cancer, and he wasn’t sure if he was going to make it to his birthday.  That devastating news made me wonder what it would be like to receive that kind of diagnosis.  “2 Months” is my philosophical thoughts on the subject.

    After speaking to my new older friend several times since that first call in December, he is still in good spirts and grateful to have lived what he considers a long and happy life.  And though there will be no live band to help him celebrate his milestone, it is my hope that he will appreciate this tribute song in his honor, being released as a surprise on his birthday, 2/3/2021.
