When I called this episode of Routes & Branches & Beyond "Music for the Potting Shed," I had a very ecumenical view of what your potting shed may look like.  It could be a ramshackle jumble of rotting boards in the far corner of the yard, or a closet in your basement, or an oddly-empty bit of your garage, or a sliver of space on your apartment balcony - it doesn't matter what it looks like, it is still a sacred space where life can be renewed.  And if you are unconvinced at calling a potting shed a sacred space, your soul is shrivelling up like a parched and frost-touched cucumber transplant.

So today I'll offer some thoughtful, and sometimes rather thought-free, music for your own potting shed, whether it be a physical space or an interior expanse.  I'll offer gravel walks, sentinel crows, June days, local barrel daredevils, big sky blues, Locaber dances, raven hair, Scottish passions, night advances, river crossings, lots of trees and even a wang dang doodle or two. Like all expressive forms of arts, celtic and folk music uses its share of metaphors and allusions and poetics constructions.  And sometimes they feature show, colourful plants - like flowers.  So this week and beyond, on Routes & Branches & Beyond, I'll be featuring songs and tunes that make a reference to flowers - just in time for those bursts of flamboyance that we are seeing all around us these days.  I'll have butterflies and bees and flowers, pretty fair maids in the garden, flowers of sweet Erin the green or of Kilkenny or of the forest or of red hill, and even a tune on taking the flower arrangements home after the wedding.

On this episode of Routes & Branches & Beyond (#327) we feature another show of tunes and songs that reference flowers - the joy of this time of year where I live.  When I say that we "reference" flowers, I don't mean that we notice them in passing and file that memory away to go on to more important obsessions like "will the Central Bank decrease the overnight lending rate?"  No.  I mean that we celebrate the uses of floral-related metaphors in celtic and folk music, revelling in how the beauty in our natural world is often reflected in those who travel alongside us in our own halting and imperfect human world.  In other, less convoluted, words - we often refer to our loved ones as the flowers of our life.  Proper thing, too.  You'll hear fiddle-accordion delights, wildflower banjo honey, cello-soaked laments, the flowers of Saskatchewan or of Bermuda or of the Red Mill of of teh Dell (there beside the Farmer), and even a few dried flowers, just for a touch of accent in the room.
