CELLULOID DREAMS THE MOVIE SHOW -- 3/13/25

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Things aren't looking bright!

It's been a while since we've had a new rock opera, and O'DESSA gives us a title character who, armed with a magic guitar, travels to a dystopian city ruled by a tyrannical game show host to fulfill an old prophecy. While there, she falls hard for her true love, but the infatuation soon turns into a rescue mission. Writer/director Geremy Jasper (PATTI CAKE$) zooms in to elucidate on his hero's journey.

From 2020:  In 1945, soon after atomic bombs exploded over Japan, two Hollywood studios were preparing big-budget films about the invention and use of that revolutionary new weapon. It was MGM that released THE BEGINNING OR THE END, a sort-of docudrama which covered the events leading from the U.S.'s initial reaction to the Nazis' own work to the project's terrible culmination at Hiroshima.  With his book, THE BEGINNING OR THE END: HOW HOLLYWOOD-- AND AMERICA-- LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB, author (and our sole guest) Greg Mitchell dives deep into studio meeting rooms, laboratories and military camps to tell the real story behind the celluloid one, detailing how what studio chief Louis B. Mayer called a "most important story" turned into a watered-down, stagey piece of Hollywood propaganda.

Sol and Gina worked hard to build their perfect life. With a passion for education, they obtain teaching positions at the same elementary school, adopt a little dog named Rosie, and in their spare time, renovate a vintage RV for an unforgettable summer road trip across America.

When Gina is killed in a school shooting, Sol, paralyzed with grief, determines to honor Gina's memory by embarking on their planned summer journey, accompanied by little Rosie, helping others and in search of his own path. DOGS ON THE SENDERO is the film and joining us is actor/ director/ writer Michael Flores.

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:  Guess who's 60? (No, it's not us!)

In a year of pretty notable anniversaries, the venerable and beloved THE SOUND OF MUSIC is celebrating its 60th in 2025, and somehow looking (and sounding) even better with each passing year! Well... our first guest knows a thing or two about that. As this classic gets a new 4K blu-ray this week, we welcome back film historian and preservationist Mike Matessino, whose extensive history with the film includes restoring the complete soundtrack for the Super Deluxe 5-CD set in 2023 and directing the definitive documentary THE SOUND OF MUSIC: FROM FACT TO PHENOMENON.

THE SUMMER BOOK is a lyrical adaptation of Tove Jansson's novel set on a remote Finnish island and which follows a grandmother, her young granddaughter and a father as they spend a season together navigating grief, memory and the quiet beauty of everyday life. Director Charlie McDowell (THE ONE I LOVE; WINDFALL) joins us to chat about his idyllic and wistful drama-- a tale of love, loss and the fragile bond between generations.

A closeted undercover cop, assigned to arrest men cruising in shopping mall bathrooms, grapples with messy, conflicted feelings when he falls in love with a married man he's assigned to entrap. PLAINCLOTHES is an intense, deeply atmospheric drama that explores the grey zones of authority, identity and the cost of living a secret life. We sit down with its writer/ director Carmen Emmi.  

From 2021: In the meditative supernatural drama NINE DAYS, a mysterious man interviews five unborn souls to determine which one can be given life on Earth. But one free-spirited candidate causes him to face his own existential challenge by looking within. We connect with writer/director Edson Oda for a hardly-remote conversation.
