Gnawa musicians have carved out a unique niche within Moroccan society, as people with revered spiritual power who use music and movement to heal the sick.  The Gnawas’ ancestors came to North Africa as slaves.  Today they are an elite class of musicians and spiritualists, celebrated in an annual festival that attracts some 400,000 fans, and invited to collaborate with such notable international artists as jazz legend Randy Weston.  In this program, originally produced in 2009, author and scholar Deborah Kapchan guides us through the history, practices, music, lore and unique contemporary stature of the Gnawa, both in Morocco and on the world stage. Interviews with Hassan Hakmoun, historian Mohammed Ennaji, and gnawa scholar Tim Abdella Fuson. Produced by Banning Eyre.

A cold winter sunday morning, opening the window of our home studio in the city of Omiya, Japan. We can see our balcony terrace, Japanese pine tree in the garden and the music room of the city’s high school just next to our place.

We don't know how long this tradition has been going on, the sounds of high school brass bands echo through the street everyday and accompany some moments of our daily life in this neighborhood for around 60 years at least. The sounds of brass celebrate our ordinary life and add some pinch of dramatic or cinematic senses in our daily life.

"Ustad Munir Khan (born 1926) belongs to a family of distinguished courtmusicians from Rajasthan that goes back many generations. Ustad Munir Khan had his musical eductaion in sarangi and vocal music under the guidance of his father Ustad Nazir Khan (1882-1975) and also became a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan with whom he studied for over forty years. Starting at a young age he participated in concerts with many great masters and he has always been much sought after for sarangi accompaniment by vocalists like Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, Ummeed Ali Khan and Bibe Khan of Punjab, Ustad Alladiya Khan, Vilayat Hussain Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Nissar Hussain Khan and Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur..."

In 1970s Burma, a quietly innovative music scene emerged during a time of increasing political isolation and state censorship. Despite limitations, local artists found creative freedom through cassette culture, using tape as a tool to explore and share a rich blend of sounds—traditional Burmese melodies interwoven with the influences of Western rock, soul, and psychedelic music. Many musicians engaged in copy thachin, adapting foreign songs with new Burmese lyrics, creating something both familiar and entirely their own. My Final Answer to Life, compiled by Gary Sullivan (Bodega Pop) for Radio Is a Foreign Country, offers a glimpse into this era through a selection of tracks from 1970 to 1978—music that reflects a culture in motion, reshaping outside influences into something deeply personal and resonant.
