For episode 4 of Mixed Results, Tony welcomes Mike Garland, former MSU assistant Basketball Coach, along with a lengthy list of other tremendous coaching experiences. They are joined by current college students Case and Cade Conley, who also had playing experience in AAU basketball along the way.
Tony and Mike have both coached at that level, Case and Cade both played in AAU and all four share stories and opinions of how that organization is as an opportunity for good players to get good basketball experience and exposure that can lead to college.
More on Coach Garland: Garland served as the Special Assistant to Head Coach Tom Izzo during the 2021-22 season, but has been on the MSU coaching staff for 22 years, starting in 1996, and helped coach the Spartans to the 2000 National Championship, seven Final Fours, 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, six Big Ten Tournament Championships and 10 Big Ten Regular Season titles.

Garland returned for his second stint on the Spartan bench prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, having previously served as an assistant coach for seven seasons from 1996 to 2003. Garland has been on staff for every Big Ten Championship the Spartans have won under Izzo. He excelled in self-scouting and individual player improvement. His instruction led to six Spartans being selected in the NBA Draft during a three-year span from 2000-02. In total, he has worked with 18 Spartans who have been selected in the draft.

In 2006-07, Garland served as associate head coach at SMU under Matt Doherty. Prior to that, he was head coach for three seasons at Cleveland State, posting a 23-60 record, while increasing the Vikings' win total each season. In his second season, the Vikings improved by six wins in Horizon League play, which was the fifth-best improvement in league history at the time.

Before he became a college coach, Garland enjoyed a successful nine-year stint as varsity head coach at Belleville High School. During that time, he posted a career record of 153-49 (.757) while earning numerous coaching honors. He was selected as the Associated Press 1993-94 Michigan High School Coach of the Year, while also being named the Michigan Mega Red Conference Coach of the Year. Garland, who coached three players to first-team all-state honors during his tenure at Belleville, was named The Detroit News All-Metro West Coach of the Year in 1990-91, while being selected as the All-Suburban Coach of the Year during the same campaign by the Detroit Free Press. His Belleville teams won six Mega Red Conference championships, four district titles and advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals in 1991. He spent five seasons as an assistant at Belleville before being named head coach.

Garland started his coaching career in 1977 with a two-year stint as an assistant basketball coach at Cody High in Detroit. Garland then headed to private business for several years before his desire to teach led him back into coaching as the junior varsity coach at Belleville High in 1982.

Garland earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and community recreation from Northern Michigan in 1977. While at NMU, he was the recipient of the Minority Student Academic Achievement Award. Izzo and Garland were teammates on the Wildcats basketball squad.

Garland's family includes his wife, Cynthia, daughter, Simone, and sons Quentin and Michael Ray, and grandchildren Simone, LaNyla, Jacqueline, Amanda, Jeremiah, Helen, Isaiah and Mikey

For episode 5 of Mixed Results, Tony welcomes Doctor John H. Braccio, who has been in private practice as a Fully Licensed Psychologist in Michigan since 1978. He continues an active private practice. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1971. He founded Regional Psychological Services in 1981 and continues to be the Director.
Their conversation covers mental health and the seemingly constant social divide, people not listening to each other, people in isolation after the pandemic, political divide, and how we can move forward to a better future.
In a professional career beginning as a classroom teacher in 1966, Dr. Braccio has taught school in California and Michigan, been a public school administrator, worked as a consultant at various levels, has done innumerable inservices and training sessions, has taught many graduate and undergraduate classes at Michigan State University, has done executive coaching and consultations, and has done many thousands of hours of individual psychotherapy and psychological assessments. He lectures, does workshops and writes on such topics as AD/HD, Weight Loss, Marriage and Divorce, Addiction, Smoking Cessation, Anger Management, Test Anxiety, Learning Disabilities and Hypnosis. He has written over 400 newspaper articles, three books and developed numerous self-help tapes, CDs and DVDs.
Dr. Braccio has determined he would like to share the knowledge, wisdom and insights he has learned from working with thousands of persons since he began his career in education and psychology as a classroom room teacher in 1966. Even though he developed many self-help tape programs over a 25 year period, it was not until 2005 that he was determined to share his vast knowledge on a large scale.

Tony Conley welcomes Maya Washington, a filmmaker (writer/director/producer), actress, writer, poet, Creative Director, and arts educator. Her production company, Running Water Entertainment, LLC produces and publishes award winning content with a global reach. Maya received a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Southern California and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. Her work has garnered awards from Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television, and others.


Originally from Minneapolis, MN, Maya began her creative career as a dancer turned musical theatre actor in the Twin Cities vibrant theatre community as a child performer. While at USC, she studied acting, directing, film and dramatic writing, which allowed her to explore her passion for storytelling in a variety of mediums. While pursuing her MFA, Maya worked full time as a professional actor and choreographer. She even managed to complete a national tour of William S. Yellow Robe’s Grandchildren of the Buffalo Soldiers, a co-production of Penumbra Theatre Company and Trinity Repertory Company, as she finished her MFA thesis in Poetry.


Her background, on stage/camera and behind the scenes, has given her the opportunity to work on everything from live theatre, public art, commercials and print ads, to web series, films and television. Maya is dedicated to multi-disciplinary projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America. Her film work has also allowed her projects to have a global reach, including Toronto, Budapest, Hong Kong, Berlin, and Rome.

In two seasons with the Thundering Herd, Huff has led Marshall to a pair of winning seasons and bowl appearances, compiling a 16-10 record along the way.

Huff led Marshall to a 9-4 record in 2022, which included a 26-21 win on the road at No. 8 Notre Dame – the team’s first win over a top-10 team since 2003. Huff also navigated the Thundering Herd to a five-game winning streak at the end of 2022, which is one of the nation’s longest heading into the 2023 season. The 2022 season culminated with a 28-14 win over UConn in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

In Huff’s inaugural season in Huntington, Marshall finished 7-6 while going to its 17th bowl appearance since moving up to FBS in 1997.

Charles Huff was named Marshall's head football coach on January 17, 2021.
