‘Motion’ is the new EP release on PAN’s sublabel CODES from Belgian producer SKY H1.

Having previously collaborated with producers and collectives such as Bala Club and Creamcake, Brussels-based SKY H1 has since performed at the likes of multi-media 3HD Festival and Amsterdam’s Sonic Acts to high acclaim for her distinctly forward-thinking sound.

Drawing from a background of widely-varying musical tastes from Ambient to Grime, her own work is an amalgamation of emotive compositions of orchestral Elysian synths, often displaced with sparse percussive elements.

The new record, ‘Motion’ is a highly personal endeavour, constructed from the results of a turbulent time - where she describes it as ‘a flash of her emotional state over the last few months’. “It signi-fies leaving behind a period in my life and stepping into something new.” She explains.

Moving through bleak soundscapes layering vaporous choral synths, ethereal vocals and glassy, lucid tones crafted in complex structures, the record bears moments of melancholy as well as joy on tracks like ‘Tell Me’ and ‘I Think I Am’. “It's about going through the different stages of grief and accepting the positive effects the loss of someone can have on you.” She says. “It's about experiencing an intensely emotional time with a lot of ups and downs, and I think this is transparent in the way the tracks are ordered.”.

Restive Plaggona is a Greek project, which grows more and more intriguing with every release. This new album by Dimitris Doukas, a producer from Corfu, has a bright cinematic character and would perfectly suit a cyberpunk dystopia. The plot is populated by sharp-toothed post-industrial creatures with a technoid bite (do you remember that dream you had last night?). However, narrative is not limited to playing cat and mouse with monsters. Rather, a supposed protagonist enters into rather whimsical relationships with them. The album's name, according to the author, is "political in nature and refers to our obligation to reject any relationship with power and order". In this case the disturbing tunes of 'Orders Rejected' can be treated as a story about dangers on the way to Edem of social self-organisation (or its unexpected implications).

On ‘Can’t Comfort’ Aphir notes: “I feel that a lot of people, young women especially, are taught that sometimes you have to exhaust yourself looking after other people before you're allowed to look after your own needs, and this song is a rejection of that”.

Swedish producer Toxe's sharp ascent through club-cursed climes has elicited the highest praise from the start. In just a few years she has linked up with Staycore and Halcyon Veil, presented an A/V project 
with The Vinyl Factory, and scored KENZO's FW 2016 prints presentation with close collaborator Mechatok. Her new EP 'Blinks' is a fractal bloom of candied melodies and minor laments set in a sweep of frenetic rhythmic scenes. 

Developed throughout last year, 'Blinks' journals a period of inward flux. And though this is never presented in an overtly self-conscious way on the EP, Toxe binds a sweet juvenilia with a bustling and eager pensive tone to outline her tessellating sense of self just below the surface. 

Meditative glimpses of soaring synthetic landscapes are woven across 'Blinks' in brief snatches. Awash in horrific and gripping fluorescent hues, these environments are augmented by a comically mischievous 
patchwork of voices and saccharine rasps that clamour for attention, hinting at Toxe's impulse to voice a simultaneous and unorganised set of experiences. 

The release is mastered by Jeremy Cox, featuring art by Jasper Spicero.

NEN Records is happy to present the first full-length album by Nick Larkin, a musician, DJ and sound producer from Moscow. The ‘surrender/control’ opposition, revealed in the record’s title, is a two-stroke mechanism, which, like exhalation and inhalation, sets in motion the life cycle. Systole and diastole, kick drum beat and pause, flash in the night and thickening darkness - those are the elementary particles that make up the deadly routine and fractal carnival of everyday life. Larkin draws his unique pattern by means of hypnotic A-class techno, using only analog instruments. The album, featuring experimental tracks as well as dance floor grooves, is finely complimented by two remixes – penned by Le Chocolat Noir (Croatia) and Beat Movement (Italy).

Body Control

Loss is the theme that unites the participants of this split. Savage Cult (Rennes, France) considers it in a mythical way. The archetypal story of an exiled king who lost his throne and Kingdom is told through cinematic ambient and tribal techno. German Army (San Bernardino, USA) continues its exploration of endangered cultures and languages, capturing them in ethnoise collages. Reference to the internment of the Japanese Americans during World War II, which resulted in 120,000 people losing their home, is an unplanned but appropriate rhyme with the first side of the split. Despite the difference in sound strategies of the participants, this album is an integral journey into the realm of the reflective nostalgia.

‘Your Heroine’ was originally written as a potential candidate for Aphir’s 2015 debut album ‘Holodreem’, but she decided that it needed something more - something that she wasn’t quite ready to give.

The track was instead gifted to one of her favourite artists, Tim Pearce, who recorded it as ‘Katie’ for his band The Wrst. What started life as a experimental choral piece was reinvented in Pearce’s hands as a Drones-inspired garage rock jam. Flash forward four years, and Aphir returned the favour by recording Tim’s song ‘Diving Bell’ with a video by long-term collaborator and film-maker Simone Thompson. 

Reminded of her previous collaboration with Tim, and of the song that got away, Aphir reopened the door on ‘Your Heroine’ and, drawing on more advanced production and mixing skills, found a new lease of life for the song. 

“Your Heroine is about the bottom-of-the-barrel exhausted feeling when you care deeply about someone and they don’t feel the same way about you,” she says.

‘Your Heroine’ comes as a double-headed single, coupled with Aphir’s version of ‘Diving Bell’.
