This week on the Global Research News Hour, as the world witnesses in horror the real consequences of the first super-powers confrontation since the fall of the Berlin Wall, we try to take a closer look at the truth behind the scenes, the source of the conflict and whether or not the situation can and will be peacefully resolved. In our first half hour, Glenn Michalchuk of Peace Alliance Winnipeg drops by to articulate the demands of his and similar groups across the country relating to Canada’s role in restoration of peace. We also play part of an interview recorded last week with geopolitical analyst and investigative journalist Pepe Escobar about the direction this stand-off was headed and about the role of Kazakhstan as playing a sneaky behind the scenes role in the chaos. Finally in our second half hour we have a talk with the long time foreign correspondent in Russia John Helmer about the larger context and the factors giving Russia an edge.

Count-Down to Apocalypse: Are the US and Russia finally on course toward World War 3?

As the war enters its fourth week Russia's advance on major Ukrainian cities is still bogged down and stymied by a fierce Ukrainian resistance. So we're effectively in a race against time. Can Ukraine hold out long enough for Russia's economy to crumble and undermine its ability to wage war?

War and Consequences

(Please note: The following description was added one day after this track was first posted, and after a few listeners had liked it. In all fairness, since the description wasn't there when those listeners liked it, it should be said that they may not necessarily agree with what I've expressed below...)

This recording was especially made as a contribution to the Northern Hemisphere's ''International' Dawn Chorus Day'. Personally, I prefer to call it 'Northern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day', because in the Northern Hemisphere it is Spring and the days are long, while in the Southern Hemisphere it is Autumn and the nights are long. For that reason, I would prefer to celebrate a complementary 'Southern Hemisphere Dawn Chorus Day'. The complementary polar date would be the first Sunday in November.

However, here where I live, a human-concocted curse called 'Daylight Saving' is inflicted (for human economic reasons) on much of Nature from the first Sunday of October every year until the first Sunday in April of the following year. One of the most significant consequences of this curse is that, in most places, First Light, and the Dawn Chorus (also known as The Hour of the Birds), are never truly free of the contamination of human economic activity and the vast noise that goes with it. Nature is never given time to be itself, to hear itself, except in its remotest parts (and even then, of course, there are the jets, carrying busy little humans to and fro across the skies). Even so, I believe it is good and wholesome to seek out, be immersed in, absorb, enjoy, and celebrate the dawn; and perhaps, in this way, inspire others with a sense of the importance and value of giving Nature some genuine time off from our noisy human ways. Imagine an International Day of Human Silence for Nature...
