Shepherd Wheel has been generating power from water for centuries on the Porter Brook in Sheffield - described by the then owner William Beighton in a 1584 as "a watter whele called Potar Whele..."  this historic industrial water wheel (later named after the Shepherd family) has survived and turns to this day.

Power of the Shepherd Wheel

I have a soft spot for this track as it was one time where I had an idea and the end result exceeded my expectations.  In this case, I wanted the piano to sound like small waves hitting the side of a dock, canoe, or aluminum boat and was happy with how the delay effect helped accomplish that.  The vocals were another story.

The original mix (2020) used the sample  instrument “Realivox Blue” which although ‘ethereal’ was lacking emotion. This instrument (for me)  is difficult to use and program, which led to very simple slow moving lyrics. A remix in 2021 used an analog (human) singer, which turned out better, but still not what I had in mind. Now with the sample library “Synthesizer V” I think I’m finally happy with the result.

Delicate Life is the first chapter in a new series of works using field recordings from my La Baldi Residency in Tuscany in 2025. These chapters will form the basis for one of two new performances conceived during residency and scheduled to be performed later in 2026. The first will be a combination of fixed media soundscapes with live Bass Guitar and Intonarumori that explores the history of Mt.Amiata. the 2nd performance ( currently for Piano, Saxophone and Percussion) will use sonic maps to produce a graphic score for the ensemble to improvise with.

I may feel a flicker of pity, but only while scrolling through the timeline. 
Once the mainspring is wound and I start to walk, it is already forgotten.
"What shall I eat tonight?" I wonder. 
Even if I stripped away the internal mechanism and replaced it with love or something like it, it becomes neither love nor anything at all. 
Even when a parent dies, I keep on sequencing.
