Regnum vegetabile follows the model of our previous work Regnum animale, and thus it can be said that it is a sort of second chapter in a reflexion about nature and its conceptualisation.

As in Regnum animale, two references are at the base of Regnum vegetabile. The first is the Medieval tradition of herbaria, intended as multi-faceted catalogues of miscellaneous plants, among which different relations can be defined. A second reference for the work is taxonomy, that is, the systematic description of living organisms that dates back to Linnaeus' Systema Naturae as the Rationalistic possibility of ordering the polymorphous (and many times teratomorphic) appearance of nature. In Regnum vegetabile the main refer- ence from the plant regnum are cacti, green plants with wooden-like structures and animal-like claws that are not by chance native of the New World.
One of the foundational aspects of taxonomy in the so-called “binomial nomenclature”, that provides for each organism a name specifying its place in relation to other organisms by means of the couple genus et species. This way of “giving name” to beings is at the origin of the titles of the piece.
The heterogeneity of herbaria and cacti is at the origin of both the setup and the organisation devised for Regnum vegetabile. The for- mer includes traditional acoustic instruments (string and wind trio), surrounded by an amass of computer-driven, electro-mechanical devices that focus on air production (i.e. wind instruments) by means of modified hair dryers.
For what concerns the organisation, indeed the general model is the catalog: Regnum vegetabile is thus a sequence of short pieces, each one dedicated to an imaginary plant. Here the second model –taxonomy– enters into play: each of the pieces has received a name following the binomial nomenclature. Hence, Regnum vegetabile is also the second chapter (after Regnum animale) of a systematic report about the strange creatures found in a terra incognita.

Analyse and recreation of these scenes in the instrumental writing, dealing with the concept of time and space in the context of musical speech. In the electronic part working with resynthesis of complex sounds and recorded noises and the spatialisation of textures and scapes in a 3D space.
I have used some synthesized sounds from the SPAD application of Charles Verron.

C’est dans la forêt que Nuria Gimenez Comas est ici allée chercher à la fois son imaginaire sonore et son inspiration — notamment dans la pensée de Giambattista Vico (1668-1744), historien et philosophe italien. Jouant sur l’opposition entre la forêt et la cité, l’un remettant l’autre en question, Vico met en regard intuition poétique et philosophie abstraite, sensorialité et fait politique. De tous ces concepts et images, la compositrice tire un essai musical sur l’imaginaire occidental. Dessinant diverses « scènes sonores », la partie électronique lui permet d’explorer la dualité entre son concret et son instrumental, à l’aide notamment du processus de resynthèse (analyse et restitution du son en temps réel)."

L’idée rythmique de la pièce est inspirée par des rythmes mécaniques et répétitifs de quelques machines ou des mécanismes qui font partie de la vie quotidienne. L’harmonie, qui provient de l’analyse perceptive des fréquences de ces machines, mélangées avec l’harmonie de sons complexes du saxophone, va se densifier progressivement dans la première section.
Suit un passage plus instrumental, avec une certaine ouverture, plus inspiré d’une écriture proche du free-jazz : de subtils choix d’articulation, nuances, fluctuations de tempo, dialogue et écoute-imitation vont provenir des instrumentistes.
Une deuxième section plus bruitée avec des rythmes de plus en plus mécaniques et des boucles va déboucher sur une dégradation des machines ainsi que sur une progression vers des sons étirés chaque fois plus synthétiques qui vont nous amener à une longue coda.
Avec une certaine mélancolie pour ces machines (qui commencent à être remplacées par des nouvelles ‘digitales’ et silencieuses), une partie plus étirée, avec des rythmes déjà entendus ainsi qu’une densification progressive vers des mots en morse et des sons de synthèse de plus en plus épurés, va s’opposer ou faire contraste à la première partie.
