A mix put together and performed the other day to celebrate Purim @ Sketchy Beats, recreating as faithfully as I could how magical it was in the moment ! Purim is a holiday based on the story of Jews living under the rule of the Persian King Ahasuerus in approx 4th or 5th BCE. When a vizier of the persian emperor, Haman, gets it into his head to wipe out all Persian Jews, it is only because of the guiles and careful planning of the emperor’s wife, Esther (who is Jewish without the emperor knowing), that the Jews of Persia evade this fate. The holiday is traditionally celebrated through masquerade and dressing up to do comedic re-enactments of the story (called the Purim Spiel). There is also a long history of people getting in drag for the Purim Spiel. Though there are complexities and tensions within the story, such as its conclusion of killing Haman and all his sons, which dangerously echoes Zionist ideas around Jewish safety of “kill or be killed”, the story also captures the proximity to violence so many marginalised groups face under oppressive regimes, and the forms of subversiveness, play and deception that especially queer people engage in for their physical and emotional survival. This set is somewhat of an attempt at a Purim Spiel, in audio form, taking the serious, traumatic and mundane terrors of our repressive regimes alongside the humor and joy we find in between the cracks, taking parts and sounds that we're told don't/shouldn't mix, to iterate and reiterate, finding solidarity and harmony to transform through playing the parts over again, and make something new through that process.

Nicola Cruz’s music beautifully invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland, Ecuador, a country that contains both the majestic Andes mountains and the mighty Amazon jungle. For his debut on Multi Culti, Nicola has created Mantis, and it is arguably his most accomplished club record to date, a 105bpm tribal chugger that flexes shamanic authority over hearts and minds. Invocacion goes even deeper into the new, new age, presenting traditional instrumentation and mysticism in a modern framework. Australia’s Xanga joins in with a super lively, rhythmic remix that is as joyful as it is deep. Finally, Brazil’s L_cio presents a version that strips things down for club play, upping the tempo while keeping the characteristic flavour of the flute.

Northern Italy, particularly Milan and the Veneto area have always been very open minded when it comes to new club sounds. Italy´s best tropical bass night, "Balera Favela" is hosted in Milan by Ckrono, Milangeles are stemming from Milan and Lamento has been founder of the "Muevelo o Mundo" club nights in the town of Bassano Del Grappa in the Veneto area. Many Man Recordings artists have DJed in clubs of this North Italian network.

Now Lamento, aka Andrea Campagnolo, releases his debut release on Man Recordings. A passionate record collector, Lamento has been digging music from the Southern hemisphere for years, particularly African wax. For his debut, he channels voice recordings from the Mongo people who live in the equatorial forest of Central Africa.

"Balama" comes with an all Italian remix-line up, including a tribally influenced remix by Lorenzo BITW, a UK funky inspired remix by Ckrono and a deeped-out trap remix by The Clerk.
