All the old little things we have lost *

This piece of music from 1971/1975 is by an experimental composer by the name of Gavin Bryars. It’s called “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet.”

It has a kind of distorted loop of a homeless man – Scottish or Irish – and he’s singing that little refrain, “Jesus’ blood never failed me yet…”.

Bryars builds this orchestration and chord structures and melodies around this loop. But it really just repeats this loop over and over.

And it’s pretty compelling. There’s stories of Bryars while he was building the loop, it was playing in a section of the art school that he was working in, and people that were painting next door came to him sobbing, and said, “You’ve got to turn that off! It’s affecting us too much.”

La mémoire.

Les idées qui s’entremêlent, se fractionnent.

Avec le temps, les oublis deviennent plus fréquents.
On se répète.
La confusion devient chose courante, les souvenirs se distordent.
On se répète.
Ça devient hors de contrôle, enrageant.
Et ce n’est que dans les rares moments de lucidité qu’on se rend compte de ce qui se passe. 

Mais les ravages ne disparaissent jamais.

Dementia est une représentation musicale de l’évolution de la maladie d’Alzheimer. La dégradation, l’incohérence et les tensions sonores se font de plus en plus importantes au cours de la pièce, suivant les différents stades de la maladie.

Dementia - EXTRAIT

HOWL ON features the live and processed sounds of François Houle and Terri Hron often under- and overblowing clarinets and recorders. Their first project, Monodie, is an improvisatory score that uses a set of samples tooled from mono recordings of their combined sound, creating a hybrid instrument between them.

The present version is a stereo arrangement.

"The Other Side" was conceived for the opening week of the new concert hall of the university of music "Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden (Germany). For the composition of this work I exploited specially the electroacoustic possibilities of the hall and considered the geometrical peculiarities of its room: Since the public range is rather widthwise as lengthwise oriented and very irregularly positioned, a multichannel electroacoustic composition cannot start out from a "central hearing perspective". The audio equipment of the hall makes possible a different organization of the spatial structure in each hearing position. This idea was for me the central task during the realization of the composition concept. I took full advantage of the spatial configuration of the hall particularly by means of sound movements: The listener participates through the moving and merging of the sound in different spaces, which bring him to different acoustic levels.

As raw material I used high-quality audio samples, which already contain a musical meaning by itself and whose constellation only in a university of music is to be found: an orchestra, a choir, an electric guitar… I processed this samples with the computer and merged them in the composition with the originals. The combination of raw and finished materials forms the dramaturgy of the work.

The other side

I am an artist, writer and musician from Hastings, UK.  I make slightly wonky acoustic folk-pop, often with unusual guitar tunings, along with instrumentals that mix acoustic and electronic textures. 

Musically my current obsession is Judee Sill.
But it always comes back to the music of my childhood- The Cocteau Twins, The Waterboys, ABBA, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush.
